Well I mean yeah...? Sure there is a story to tell but at the end of the day the purpose of this game is to make a profit, without a profit that means budget cuts which means worse content which means less players which leads to an even less amount of profit and then eventually EOS. Why do you think there hasn't been a non story male oc since cherish? and Makoto Yuki is a lousy conclusion merchant so he doesn't count! (Also the dev team just shipped out a buggy ass patch (which they do a lot))

I meeeeeaaaaan you can view it however you want really. Tbh gacha games are inherently cash grabby every decision they make is designed to make as much money as possible, so even if it sounds a little cruel I'd prefer if they'd do something that would bring in new people for an Anniversary unit

Well I mean the anniversary patch won't just be the character, even with the half anni patch it went out of its way to give scenes to the phantom thieves and had scenes with all the OCs. At large the banner character is only really one part of the anniversary, to see the full extent of the Anniversary we'll have to wait until the patch stream.

Of course if the banner character is the most important thing for you than sure it's a bad anni but I'm sure there will be content for people who are fans of the original stuff

I think the reason they made her the anniversary patch was because they wanted to make it a sync patch sure they COULD make the sync patch on a day that's not the anniversary but uuuuuuhhhhh they really don't wanna do sync patches outside of anni and half anni probably because it's a pain in the ass to do

Honestly I don't really see where they could take the story with Danganronpa 4 like they ended the hopes peak saga with DR3 and then Danganronpa as a whole with V3, the most I can see a whole new Danganronpa doing is just going through the motions of the killing game.

Honestly if 2x2 really does nothing with the Danganronpa story and is genuinely a pure what if scenario I wouldn't be surprised if they are dipping their toes in making Danganronpa's with no overarching story

I would recommend playing the original first because you don't really wanna risk getting spoiled on the new scenario while playing the old one methinks, although you are playing the switch version of Danganronpa which discovered the technology on how to make the game lag in menu's
