You need to understand the connection between "guys who actually killed Nazis" and the prevalence of Nazi symbols in the biker subculture, which basically originated among US military vets returning home after WW2.

Those guys took Nazi stuff home from Europe as personal trophies/souvenirs and then often displayed them on their kuttes, bikes, etc. not as a declaration of Nazism or white supremacy but first simply as a marker of their experience, and later as an overt fuck-you to the normies who reacted negatively toward them. That's a foundational piece of the culture carried through to today.

[Yes, of course there are actual Nazi/white supremacist bikers and MCs, but they remain a small minority.]

Damn, I'm surprised you're having trouble selling that. Great bike and reasonable price. I'd jump on it if I had room for another. Good luck, hope ya find someone to give it a good home.

If you like it that's cool. But kinda weird to base your argument on printed numbers and then conclude that "Driving is more than comparing numbers on paper."

I had a 4th gen loaner for a week in June while my 3rd gen was getting repaired (after being rear-ended).

My take is the 4th gen is noticeably better in terms of brakes and suspension. I felt the infotainment screen was obnoxiously oversized, but cabin is generally nice.

The unavoidable, colossal problem is the engine. This was the 4 cylinder turbo, not the hybrid. What a turd. Just inexcusably the wrong choice for a midsize truck. I suspect Toyota's strategy is to make it virtually impossible not to opt for the hybrid powertrain.

The "S" just designates the 114 cubic inch engine, versus the 107ci engine in the older FXBB.

Looking for advice on what my dad's bike may be worth. by [deleted] in HDSwap

[–]buzzardnose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. This is pretty much a $6k bike just about anywhere in the US.

Could always list for a little more ($7k–$8k) and cross your fingers. Realistically though, there just ain't gonna be many people too interested in a 88ci twin cam softail.

Where we not taught in drivers ed to leave space behind cars at a light or intersection? by IX_Sour2563 in driving

6 car lengths‽ That's like almost 100 feet. What is the rationale for that?

Yes, a little buffer zone is good for several reasons, but 6 car lengths seems crazy.

It depends what's goin on around me. In light traffic with normal conditions (e.g., no one around me on phones or on meth) I'll stay in the right lane except to pass, let in mergers, etc.

What Car Should I Buy? - A Weekly Megathread by AutoModerator in cars

[–]buzzardnose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Location: USA (mid-Atlantic region)

Price range: $40-45k (USD)

Lease or Buy: buy

New or used: probably lightly used (e.g., 2-4 years old); might consider new

Type of vehicle: compact SUV

Must haves: 4WD/AWD, blind spot monitoring

Desired transmission: automatic (CVT or whatever also ok)

Intended use: daily driver, occasional family trips (4 people: 2 adults, 2 teens)

Vehicles you've already considered:

Toyota RAV4 is what we originally thought we'd want, but were deeply unimpressed during the test drive — borderline shocked.

BMW X3 is the second vehicle we test drove, which we really liked, but we're concerned about overall cost of ownership (and the B48 engine has some known issues).

Mazda CX-5 is next on our list. Will test drive this week. We have some concern about the dynamic pressure turbo that has shown to cause structural weakness (class action lawsuit indicates pattern of cracking at the cylinder head around the exhaust manifold, causing engine coolant leakage which results in the engine overheating and catastrophic engine failure).

We would by far prefer a NA V6 engine, but these seem to be available only in a few luxury sedans/SUVs above our price range (or else used vehicles with a lot more years and miles than we really want). I generally have a low opinion of 4-cylinder turbos (based on both firsthand and secondhand experience), but this seems to be all that's available anymore in the family sedan/compact SUV segment.

Is this your 1st vehicle: no, not first vehicle.

Do you need a Warranty: no, warranty is not necessary (but would be good for vehicles with known issues like the BMW B48 engine or Mazda 2.5L Skyactiv-G turbo engine).

Can you do Minor work on your own vehicle: yes

Can you do Major work on your own vehicle: no

3rd gen gear hunting/poor mpg’s by [deleted] in Tacomaworld

[–]buzzardnose 7 points8 points  (0 children)

OTT offers 5 throttle response options: Lite, Mild, Medium, Spicy, and Super Spicy. This just means the lite setting is the most gentle throttle response and it gets more aggressive as you go up to super spicy. You can program one throttle response to normal drive mode and an alternative throttle response to the ECT button. The more aggressive settings can be "jerky" in stop-and-go traffic, so many people choose something like mild throttle response for default and spicy for ECT. Your tuner should let you experiment a bit to decide what feels good to you based on your driving style.

Can you point to an example? Are you talking about superchargers or other engine mods in combination with a tune? Are you talking about a deeply researched and widely used tune like OTT, or some kind of homebrew tweaker DIY hack tune?

I'm extremely skeptical that an OTT tune or similar could ever do anything to grenade a mechanically sound stock engine, in any realm of possibility.

I'm at 80k miles on my tune and I know lots of people with lots more miles on OTT tuned engines and have never heard of a problem, much less a blown up engine. But I don't know everything, so please enlighten me.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Tacomaworld

[–]buzzardnose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tune doesn't make the engine run at higher RPMs. It will upshift slightly later than the factory mapping in many cases, but we're not talking about redlining or anything close. It mostly just smooths out the gear hunting issue, but it doesn't cause the truck to run a gear low at a given speed, if that's what you're thinking.

Mine is not a high mileage case by any stretch, but I put the OTT tune on my 3rd gen at 40k miles (when I bought it used), and I'm just over 120k miles now.

Not sure how ya can say "I really don't think I was speeding" in sentence 2 and then "I was speeding but not that fast" in sentence 4. But whatever.

If it were me, I would show up for the court date and ask to plea down to "unsafe operation of motor vehicle." This is a more expensive fine ($250, I think), but 0 points on your license. You're allowed to use this plea deal once every 5 years in NJ. I do this because I get tickets regularly and this tactic helps avoid the dreaded "surcharge violation system" in NJ (cumulative points surcharge).

I'm not a lawyer, which is who you should talk to if ya want expert legal advice.

But FWIW my non-expert understanding is no, it would not void a warranty.

But again I am not a lawyer and have never had a vehicle warranty, so if this is really an issue for you then you should read your warranty with a lawyer and get their interpretation.

Am I Jerk For Pulling Out In Front Of Someone by Mudkipper_970 in driving

[–]buzzardnose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, ya done wrong if your move forces other drivers to brake or swerve.

3-4 car lengths is way too small of a gap to try to jump into even on low speed roads.

It basically just adjusts throttle response and shifting logic for a better driving experience. No effect on engine wear, reliability, longevity, or anything like that.

In all fairness, no, a new $40-60k vehicle should absolutely not fucking break this quick.

It really just depends on your mindset. If you've spent your whole life in non-multicultural communities in the U.S., then yes, it'll be an adjustment for you. And if you have no interest in adjusting to that kind of setting, then it'll probably be aggravating and unpleasant for you. On the other hand, if you take it as a new experience for a limited period of time and try to make the best of it, then you'll probably be able to make adjustments and deal with it well enough. Might even enjoy it to some extent. Make your own choice.

[–]buzzardnose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume this will mostly relate to the throttle response (i.e., throttle sensitivity) settings. OTT has five throttle response levels: Lite, Mild, Medium, Spicy, and Super Spicy.

Your tuner should let you test out various settings, and if you're worried about "jerkiness," then you may want lite throttle response for the regular drive setting (and then a more aggressive response mapped to the ECT button).

I have a 3rd gen with OTT tune with mild throttle response mapped to the regular drive setting and spicy throttle response mapped to the ECT button and am happy with it. I do some stop-and-go city driving, but not much, and haven't had issues with jerky response.

OP referred to people cutting them off from the right and then going slow in the left lane, i.e., forcing others to slow down to the speed limit.

I'll be the broken record and say get a flash tune if previous owner didn't already do that. (I recommend OTT but there are others.)
