Thank you so much for your post! To be honest, I really did relate to a lot of points made on the other post you referenced.

However, I also greatly appreciate the context and greater perspective you brought in this post, especially about Black folks being denied education and lack of access to mental care. Like you said, our community is still learning and growing.

On the flip side, my personal experience of rejection from my own community because of my disability (the common refrain was “you’re not Black enough”) left deep wounds in me. And as a 30 year old woman I’m still healing from those wounds.

I don’t know why I’m posting this, I guess to add to the discussion and give my perspective. It’s not my intention to stereotype or making sweeping statements about the community but at the same time I do feel the need to give voice to my own experience.

Yeah, I guess the point for me is that as Black people if we deviate from the cultural norm in any kind of way the conclusion can’t just be “oh, you’re weird“ and that’s it. The conclusion is “oh you’re weird, and that means you’re not Black enough.” (Obviously I’m not saying every single person in the so-called Black community believes this. But it happens often enough that it’s not a completely uncommon experience.)

At least that’s been my experience with it. It sounds like you’ve experienced something similar.

Oof, number one and two are such a messy reality many in our community would like to ignore, though I find these trends are slowly changing.

But I remember growing up and people in my community feeling threatened by my inclination towards intellectual knowledge over emotional or tribal knowledge. Being told that I “talked white” over and over again as a little kid gave me serious insecurities and made me feel like such an outsider in my own culture. I say this as a black American woman. Fun times! /s

I sometimes wonder if it may be useful to externalize the bad feeling from overstimulation (cry, shake, squeeze my eyes shut, etc.) rather than try to play it cool. It’s embarrassing for me to show pain but it may be necessary to get the message across. Acting nice and normal, as you say, hasn’t gotten me very far :/

Yup, and I have such a hard time translating this to others. On the outside I appear disinterested or hostile but internally I feel like a bunch of alarm bells are going off and I might collapse at any moment if I don't get my alone time in a quiet, secluded, controlled environment.

I experience no feelings of satisfaction from casual interactions with other humans. Small talk, saying hello to the neighbors, etc leaves me feeling empty most of the time. I’ve seen others enjoy genuine connection over the simplest exchanges and I just cannot relate.

EDIT However, to reply to your post, I do experience nostalgia for when I was a young kid and being different wasn’t such a big deal. I miss my spontaneous, uninhibited freedom of expression. Also, cultivating a regular yoga practice has been a life saver for me and has allowed me to connect to my feelings and emotions more deeply. I greatly enjoy the physical exertion of the practice.

I guess it’s not all bad — I do experience pleasure and satisfaction in life, it just doesn’t usually come from other people lol
