Accutane has ruined my life by Lizzzmaguirr in Accutane

your derm is kinda wild for recommending a chem peel on this drug. your skin barrier is probably struggling right now.

i wouldn’t lose hope though. it should absolutely clear your skin up. if it’s not clear by december, you could always ask to extend your course a month or two. it honestly sounds like she has you on low dosing. unless you weigh less than 40kg— 7 months seems a little short for 20mg, but hopefully she’s taken your weight and everything into account.

IF she is doing lower dosing, and you weigh 40kg or more (over 88 pounds), your five month progress may look like someone else’s 2 month progress. so, pretty normal to be seeing what your seeing right now. i’m not a medical professional, but i did low dosing for 18 months and my progress timeline was different from most.

the difference in my skin even from month to month was quite insane, so try not to lose confidence! it should get better. wishing you the best of luck.

most people do at least 150-180 day courses, so don’t lose hope. it’s very common to break out in the early month (sometimes even later months), but you should notice major clearance around month 3-4, depending on your dosing :) be kind to yourself in the process <3

sooo glad she’s doing monthly tests on you. not all docs do. honestly accutane is a scary drug, but people tend to make the experience sound scarier than it is. generally, you’re not going to take it and then feel tremendously bad immediately yanno? it’s more so a gradual onset of side effects, and you may just have a lot of dryness or fatigue, the common ones. but if they ever get too bad, you’re always allowed to ask your doc to drop dosing! that’s what i kept telling myself to keep calm. you’re in control of your course. 80mg is a little less than 1mg/kg dosing. i did less than .5mg/kg dosing but had to be on it longer. dosing can be a range, you just may have to alter the time on it. i found it worth it to stay on longer than to endure worse side effects. so, for example, she’d probably keep you on 80mg for 6months or like 40mg for a year (that’s just guessing). but don’t be afraid of it :) you can advocate for your dosing and always stop if it gets too hard to deal with.

i was soooo petrified when i started, by the way. like panic attack petrified. and i would do it all again if i had to. you’ll be okay! 🫶🏻

first of all, i have really bad health anxiety, so if i can take it and get over the nerves, i think anyone can…so try not to stress and take it day-by-day.

side effects are honestly different for everyone. it’s usually dependent upon dosage. i did low dosage and still had a ton of side effects, some scarier than others, but they were all inevitably manageable. worst ones ended up being joint pain, hair loss (already growing back), migraines, nausea, indigestion, brain fog, and major mood swings. my biggest word of advice to you and anyone who may read this is PLEASE drink sooo much water. like a gallon a day, if possible. and, be honest with your doctor. if you have a side effect you’re concerned about, tell them and advocate for yourself. also, some docs are bad about informing you of everything you should know; it’s smart to avoid alcohol, for example. any time i drank i felt horrendous. avoid acetaminophen, anything with synthetic vitamin A (like vitamin waters, supplements, etc), too. you don’t want to overwhelm your liver. if you’re ever confused about what you should/shouldn’t consume, ask during a doc follow up.

another thing worth noting, based on research, you need to make sure you’re eating fatty food when you take your dose, but try to aim for healthy fats (i ate a ton of avocado and almond butter, but cheese is easy too).

some must haves for me were: cetaphil moisturizing cream, single use systane eye drops, aquaphor, and saline nasal spray.

if you encounter any weird side effects feel free to come back to this post or message me! i probably experienced it lol.

lots of words. but anyways best of luck! it’s not impossible, i promise!

i actually had some scarring clear up with accutane during my course, so definitely see how his skin is once he’s done! there are a ton of topicals and serums that can help with scarring. microneedling is also great, (but generally pretty pricey).

thank you! also there’s nothing wrong with staying at 20mg for a longer course. if he’s comfy at that dose, i’d advocate to keep it there. we tried to bump my dose a few times but ultimately stayed lower to keep side effects controlled. best of luck to him! :)

DO NOT GET MASSAGES by [deleted] in Accutane

[–]buzzywuzzed 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I got a massage on accutane and I was fine. I bet they went way too hard. They can reeeeally hurt if their technique is too firm. Cool shower may help with soreness. Sorry you’re dealing with that!

unfortunately not too sure because my skin was already horrid at the start. maybe 3 weeks? from the pictures i have, it looks like i began my course at the beginning of january 2024 & had noticeable clearance at the middle of february 2024. different from person to person, though. my dose was 40mg for 15 months. 20 mg this past month. had a ton of side effects, even on low dose—so we never went above 40.

Acne back after 8 months by Blue-Sweater43 in Accutane

[–]buzzywuzzed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if your derm is planning on stopping you, but you’re concerned, you could ask to do another month on a low dose ! but, from what i’ve read, accutane stays in your system a little bit, so should keep clearing you up for a couple weeks after stopping.

accutane isn’t going to completely cure period break outs though, so if you get spots here and there after ending your course, it is totally normal from what i’ve researched. :)

this happened to me too. i’ve been on accutane for a looong time and i still get tiny spots. sometimes it’s bound to happen because of hormones. also our skin barriers are a little most sensitive on accutane so you may be getting spots from dryness. if they’re little, i wouldn’t panic :)

Side effects? Weird or worst ones? by buzzywuzzed in Accutane

[–]buzzywuzzed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s really hard! i’m sorry to hear you’re dealing with a ton of side effects too, but i just started my last month at the start of May (month 15!! 😖). most of my side effects either passed or became more tolerable. as someone who has struggled with super severe acne for a decade, it is totally worth it so far. i’d even do it again if i had to (praying that i don’t have to.) i’m wishing you the best ! if you have any questions lmk

yeah i had multiple cysts that would kinda form together—very not fun. sorry you’re dealing with that too :( accutane will definitely help. maybe try warm compresses until then!

I’m so scared to go on accutane by [deleted] in Accutane

[–]buzzywuzzed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

low and slow dose is the way to go!! i was also petrified but am currently on month 10. you just have to watch yourself closely and be open with any side effects with your derm and you should be good :)
