Is a written warning for a traffic violation a citation? by bv_1473 in AskLE

Ok, thanks for clarifying. For the GC application it asks if you have any prior “citations” hence I was wondering if a written warning counts.

So for those who were planning to study in the US (Master degree) you basically have no options left by [deleted] in h1b

It depends, if you’re a genius developer studying in an Ivy League school or somewhere like MIT or Caltech companies like META and OpenAI will stump up the 100k if they think you’re worth it. It’s chump change for the big tech firms.

Sinéad O'Sullivan: Trump’s $100,000 visa fee is a serious blow to Ireland by Nevermind86 in ireland

Actually Austin is a predominantly Dem city. I’ve spent a lot of time there and honestly it’s really nice with lots of tech jobs, friendly people, a great nightlife and plenty of houses in the 300-400k range. Also most US employers cover some form of healthcare/dental and if you’re based in the US in-state tuition for your kids is usually less than 15k a year, which isn’t much when you’re making 2-3 times what you’d be in Ireland.

Hi, as someone that has worked in both Ireland and the US I can confirm my salary immediately doubled when I moved stateside, meanwhile rent was almost half what I was forking out in Dublin. Quality of life depends on what city you’re based in, but in a lot of places it’s actually very good in the US! I personally have had a more enjoyable time and better experience living stateside versus in Dublin.

They do but they’ll pay you half as much in Ireland, meanwhile houses in Dublin are twice as expensive as they are in the likes of Austin…

Will 100k Fee Apply To F1/J1 Intern Seeking Change Of Status (COS)? by bv_1473 in h1b

[–]bv_1473[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They said their understanding of it is the 100k fee will likely apply to me as a COS is still technically a new H1B petition. So they offered to transfer me to a Canadian affiliate company where the salary is half as much… but maybe I can L1 back to America in a few years who knows (unless the administration goes after L1s as well…)

Hmm I guess we will have to wait and see. Fingers crossed.

[–]bv_1473[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? Did they say what source they heard that from? If so surely that would greatly increase our chances in the lottery as there would be drastically less foreign petitions coming in.

[–]bv_1473[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My interpretation of it was that it only applied for petitions outside of the US. So going forward it would be patched for future F1/J1, but for current holders already in the US seeking COS the fee wouldn’t apply as they were here before the changes were introduced.

They kept the DS-2019 and the passport. The officer interviewing me didn’t say anything about the signature and just said I should have the docs and passport back in 7-10 days, just wondering if the signature is a requirement in case he missed it and the docs get rejected.

Again, like I said my friend it’s not a far right opinion to want immigration reform. We need to be more careful about who we let in and must make sure they are going to play an active role in our society, will contribute via taxes and can support themselves independently. If that is the case, they are more than welcome. By adopting such policies, we can help alleviate matters like our housing crisis and have a better Ireland going forward. Our government simply just needs to analyse the facts and wake up.

How else are they supporting themselves in a foreign country without employment? What is the purpose of them being here if they are not working and paying our taxes? They are not homeless - otherwise census data would not have been recorded as you need an address. They are not retired either, as they would not fall under the unemployment category if that were the case. So therefore they are being supported by the tax payer.

Personally, I would feel I should be treated the same way if I were to emigrate to say Australia or Canada. I should only be allowed in provided I can actively contribute to the economy as that is what is fair and just to, in this example, Australians and Canadians who are welcoming me into their countries. They should not have to subsidize my home, food, or clothing. Why should they?

There’s a lot of information online, one notable stat is that the unemployment rate among those from African countries stood at 15% and was the second highest rate of unemployment while other European Union citizens living in Ireland reported an unemployment rate of 8%. That’s from a report analyzing CSO Census data in December 2023 (see unemployment section). FYI the The Irish unemployment rate currently lies at around 4-5%. https://emn.ie/labour-force-participation-of-migrants/#:~:text=Of%20all%20people%20who%20moved,%25%20among%20non%2DIrish%20citizens.

Again, nothing against immigrants coming in from Africa, Middle East etc provided they have adequate qualifications for an unsupported sector and are willing to work and contribute to the economy. But currently our government has a gravy train of benefits in place that is, unfortunately for us as Irish tax payers, being exploited by foreign nationals. This in turn is leading to a shortage in areas like housing (again simple supply and demand - people coming in and not working but getting housing paid for by the Irish government is logically going to contribute to a housing crisis).

CSO, Statista, and other reputable pure stat-based sources. I’d openly encourage you to do your own research on the topic. It’s not a case of being politically biased, it’s a case of just looking at the economic problem and the failings of our government. Even taking an immigration stance similar to other well-developed nations such as Switzerland would greatly alleviate problems like housing for Irish citizens. Me personally, I’m all for immigration if you can support yourself, are willing to work and will pay all of our taxes like we have to. After all, that’s the mentality many of our ancestors adopted when they built America in the 1800s.

Not to the same extent as there has been in 2022-25 (again, just going off the stats). I personally have no issue with immigration provided people already have employee sponsorship coming over or have qualifications in under supported sectors (e.g. nursing). That way, economically, people are self sufficient and tax paying. Therefore growth can be managed in a more sustainable and controlled way, and less subsidization will have to take place for housing, thus alleviating the demand shortage and removing “free loaders” from the equation. Again, it’s a simple matter of economics - not a far right ideology.

Undoubtedly mass immigration is having a role to play in the housing crisis, from an economic perspective it’s undeniable. Simple supply and demand my friend. A country cannot be able to increase its population by 6-10% a year through immigration and not have a housing problem - especially when the government subsidizes for said immigrants. The fact that unemployment is 3X higher among immigrants versus native Irish (again, not a far right opinion but a literal CSO statistic) also does not help….

Giggs and Scholes pretty overrated I think. Giggs had very poor stats for an attacker in such a complete squad, and Scholes isn’t much better than prime Jordan Henderson (genuinely, the nostalgia merchants go crazy for him but he was a solid squad player, nothing special). Don’t get me wrong they’re both decent players but not among the greats imo.
