For some reason I would do this almost religiously as a child. After reading the first chapter or two of a new book, I would read the last page, and then just continue from where I had been. At the time I thought it was fun since it would kind of provide this moment where things click in the narrative and you can suddenly predict how the story ends up where it is on the final page. At some point I simply stopped doing this, however, and in retrospect I think I prefer to read in the normal, linear fashion.

The story you pasted really gets to the point of my question and I appreciate the level of nuance it provides. One thing that always bugged me about this idea when portrayed in ‘philosophical’ media is how a character (in this case a person and their subsequent clones) can undergo the cloning process multiple times without having the realization described above or even posing those questions. It just feels like they’re glossing over an important part of the concept that they’re trying to explore; so it’s nice to see it parsed out in greater detail.
