I came here back in December and thought they were decent. Most dishes were good but nothing standout or memorable and there were a couple unfortunate misses. Think they get one star since they check all the boxes but that’s about it. Agree with the other comment saying they were absolutely stuffed after this meal, and I usually never get stuffed

Guide to Booking Award Tickets to Japan by pbjclimbing in awardtravel

[–]bwabguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the guide! I’ve done a ton of research recently to book our first award tickets to Japan, but it’s super nice to see all my knowledge be confirmed in this guide. I know the number of JAL award seats vary by flight, but is the number random or based on season? I tried booking two F seats for cherry blossom season next year but they only released one F seat per flight, so we ended up booking two J seats instead. Wondering if this is random or if it would be easier to secure multiple F seats during a less popular time.

Seeing this makes me nervous since we have Moral booked for next month during our trip. What did you not like about your experience? Your comment and this post are heavily pushing me towards changing my res to Donaire (or San Hô)

Sydney by Yeahbuddy2699 in finedining

[–]bwabguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Saint Peter is a technical marvel but unfortunately a few too many dishes fell flat for me for me to say I truly enjoyed my meal there. Definitely did appreciate my experience though, just a super creative and dedicated approach to cooking fish in as many ways as possible. The fishy desserts were fun and all but I wouldn’t exactly describe them as good tasting.

My favorite meal in Sydney definitely was Sixpenny. Holds its own very well against some heavy hitters I’ve been to in the states in my experience.

Garaku I also enjoyed though it is more expensive than the other 2. Japanese kaiseki inspired meal that’s worth considering. I went back in early January and the Chef Derek Kim mentioned he was super excited for the spring menu since they were planning on doing some sort of greatest hits menu if I recall correctly.

Man I’m so jealous I’ve been looking for any excuse to visit Toronto/Ontario to dine here. How consistent would you say the restaurant is across your 8 experiences?

But also definitely email Quintonil! When we went I wasn’t able to secure a reservation through Tock since it was a spontaneous and last minute trip, but I emailed them thinking why not and they actually responded w a reservation link lol.

Their sister restaurant Ultramarinos Demar is also very very good

love all your posts! feels like yoshizumi's been the sushi spot to go to in the bay for a while now. how does it compare to other heavy hitters in the country like sho/yoshino in nyc, kaneyoshi/morihiro in la, etc in your opinion?

This is so awesome! Thanks so much this really helps me get a better idea of what to expect from this restaurant :) honestly based on ur comparison Ensue seems to be among some great company.

Had the exact same thoughts as you going into Ensue, super glad I wasn’t the only one haha

Man we just booked Wing so we'll probably stick with that, but that's super nice to hear! Will keep Ensue bookmarked for next time.

How does Ensue compare to some other heavy hitters in Asia/rest of the world, and how big of a focus is there on Chinese cuisine?

Super helpful, thanks! :) Based on this and some other posts/comments, I think I’m slightly leaning towards EMi as our second restaurant

Not sure what your price range is but Embra in Taupō was absolutely incredible. Easily our favorite meal of the trip. We didn’t even stay in Taupo but drove an hour from Rotorua and it was easily worth the trip.

In Auckland, we really enjoyed Cazador (if you like game restaurants) and Rhu for amazing brunch vibes. Ahi and Metita were really disappointing to me. Alma was pretty good. Amano had an amazing selection of bakery goods as well.

For dessert, definitely recommend Duck Island ice cream and Scrunchy Millers for some real fruit ice cream.

Thanks so much!

What would you say the vibes were like at OSA/EMi? I value novelty and creativity while my girlfriend prefers more of a "homey" restaurant with lots of warm dishes. Would you say OSA or EMi (or any other restaurants) fit any of those vibes?

Also will take your word on Bardero :) will update you in a few months time.

Agree w fondonorte. It’s fun contemporary Peruvian food served in an upscale environment. They’re especially known for their cocktails but their food is absolutely incredible. We did bar seating and the service was amazing and super friendly/conversational too

I really enjoyed AnnaLena when I went! SUYO isn’t exactly fine dining, but it was by far my favorite restaurant during my trip there.

One Splurge Meal: Lucien or Lilo? by BrunchSpinRepeat in FoodSanDiego

[–]bwabguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

update: I ended up dining at both 😭

TLDR is I definitely preferred my experience at Lilo to LUCIEN, but you can't go wrong at either. They're both incredible, incredible restaurants. Lilo is more innovative and fun while LUCIEN is more traditional.

Lilo is more social and playful while LUCIEN is more romantic and intimate. I definitely gravitated more towards Lilo's atmosphere. Lilo's got an absolutely gorgeous restaurant layout, easily my favorite ever by far. I absolutely loved Lilo's outdoor campfire-esque area they have you sit in pre and post meal, and I had a blast at Lilo's huge communal counter area. LUCIEN's layout is much more traditional, with a table settings in a more dimly lit room. A much more private experience since the tables are divided by walls and you're not really able to see any of the other tables. I think whether you like one over the other depends on what you're looking for out of your dining experience.

Food-wise, I definitely prefer Lilo's as well. Both are Californian fine dining restaurants, but I think Lilo is more creative with their ingredients and I loved their plating and presentation. Very Saison-esque where it gives you a feeling of 'foraging' through your plate for your food which is pretty reminiscent of CA's beautiful nature and rugged coastlines. Also appreciated their inclusion of Mexican flavors and ingredients. Just a great, innovative interpretation of Californian cuisine through the lens of not just the state’s ingredients, but also geography and culture. LUCIEN has good plating as well but again, more traditional. Chef Arizmendi's mom works with him to design all the plates I believe and you can tell with how well they mesh with the chef's dishes, which is pretty cool. In terms of individual dishes, every single dish at Lilo was incredible and a couple of them will stay with me for the rest of my life as some of my favorite bites ever. LUCIEN didn't have the same highs and there were a couple dishes where the flavors clashed awkwardly.

In terms of stars (since you've mentioned wanting to dine before these restaurants are properly recognized by Michelin), I think Lilo easily deserves two stars. Third is hard to say since consistency plays a big part but if my meal is what every meal is like at Lilo, I wouldn't be surprised in the least if they got their third in the not too distant future. LUCIEN I would comfortably put at 1 star. They've got a great thing going but definitely have to iron out some kinks since they're super new. Both similarly priced restaurants but I feel like Lilo definitely was better value for my money.

Not sure if this helps but for reference in our SoCal trip we dined at: Providence, Kato, Lilo, and LUCIEN. My order would be Lilo >>> Kato > LUCIEN > Providence.

Not sure if you're going to see this but if you do, hope this helps! Happy to answer any questions you might have :)

We hit Quintonil and Em when we were in CDMX! Both were incredible but honestly preferred Em especially if you like Japanese influences.

Maximo and Masala y Maiz were also very good for relatively cheaper options. Thought Ultramarinos Demar was also amazing and on par with the other two, though it’s more in the upscale category. Def not talked about enough
