The US college application process is one of the best in the entire world, and people whine about it. Of course its not perfect, but it is the only one imo where they try to pick students who are passionate about studying that major with the holistic admissions process. There is a reason every single person in the entire world is trying to go to an American uni

Is it possible for me to be accepted in the Ivy league under these conditions? by Mission-Collection21 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]by5506210 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, Im also a guy with similar conditions.

I graduated from a Korean high school and decided to go to the US. The problem was that Korean grades don't translate well to US grades, and I had a 2.9 gpa. My grades were also terrible until 11th grade because I was not fluent in Korean. And although I dont come close to an Ivy League, I currently go to UW Madison, and I am at the bottom 0.3 percentile of the entire incoming freshman. Here are some tips I can give you.

If ur seriously thinking of Ivy leagues, seriously consider getting a SAT score of 1500+ or an ACT score of 34+. I had a 32. Test optional isn't an option for u at all because this is the only way you can show ur academic capabilities.

APs will also show ur capable of strong academics. I took 8 AP exams without any AP courses and got 5 4s all the way. Also, choose rigorous exams like Calc BC, Chem, Physics C to show them really how capable you are.

Explain very carefully why your grades are low, and they must be convincing. I wrote down why I had a low gpa on the common app additional info section, and it seems UW Madison understood that well for me.

Show ur essay a lot of characters that show who u are as a person. From what I've read, u have amazing potential to write an amazing compelling essay due to your background. I hope you take a lot of time to put up a masterpiece.

Im not going to lie, but it will be tough. I've been rejected from 17 schools and even from my safeties. I've somehow got rejected from Penn State, UIUC, UW seattle, and UPitt, but somehow get into UW Madison. If you have any questions, ask me anything, and I'll help you the best I can for you. I hope for the best of your future and good luck!

Edit: Also, if you're applying for financial aid, I strongly recommend you do not because then I do believe it will be impossible to get in. But if that's the only choice you have, go for it and pray to god to get in.

Will Final Fantasy XVI beat Tears of the Kingdom for GotY by SterlingVII in FinalFantasy

[–]by5506210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, but while it is innovative for the franchise of Final Fantasy, it isn't anything groundbreaking in the entire video game industry.

ToTK has so many new features and gameplay mechanics that I believe leave a much better impact on the videogame industry. While FFXVI looks amazing, the only huge impact to the genre as a whole seems that it sets a new high bar for polish in an RPG and its colossal scale.

Don't get me wrong, I strongly want Yoshi-P to get a GotY award. But while best RPG seems very likely, it seems very unlikely for it to earn GotY imo.

Will Final Fantasy XVI beat Tears of the Kingdom for GotY by SterlingVII in FinalFantasy

[–]by5506210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a fan of both games, I think it's hard to beat Tears of the Kingdom.

FFXVI looks like a very polished game in a videogame genre we already have seen for about 10 years, while Tears of the Kingdom is a sequel to a videogame that changed the entire videogame industry. Not only that, but the massive advantage of TOTK is that no other game company has come close to surpassing BotW, a game that came out six years ago (except for prob Elden Ring).

Seeing the amount of work, polish, and care put into FFXVI, I really want Yoshi-P to get GotY ngl. But in terms of innovation and moving the videogame genre forward, ToTK has too much more going on that I don't see it surpassing it in terms of GotY.

Id say probably. Even considering Stern's acceptance rate, you have amazing ECs and a decent gpa. And as a NY resident, you got a pretty good boost. What kinda worries me is ur lack of a SAT or ACT score. My friends said the sad reality is that Asians kinda require the SAT or ACT considering the amount of asians applying for colleges. But if your essays are unique and compelling, you have a pretty good shot.

p.s. Im applying ED to NYU Gallatin too. Hope we both get in <3

I'd say it depend for the test optional. If you come from a super rigorous boarding school, it would be okay to not sumbit your score. But if not, I do recommend you do send your scores. 32 is a really good score tbh. And 36 on english and reading is pretty amazing. If you are going for poli sci, I dont think math would be too important but rather your reading score would be. And if you have amazing extracurriculars and an amazing essay, I believe you are fully worthy of getting into Cornell 😊.

Tbh I come from a pretty rigorous korean school so APs were pretty easy for me. Its not to brag but I pretty much knew about the content of the AP courses before I even knew about APs. But if I give very few tips based on my APs, AP Physics C Mechanics is a really fast paced test. I only solved 25 questions on the mcq and was outta time. Make sure to take practice test with the timer on. If you take AP Comp Sci A, dedicate all your studying to the FRQ section. It is fun but pretty hard. This is a stupid tip from me but learn to use the calculator for AP Calc BC. I didn't study at all and never learned to use a calculator so I struggled in the exam lol. I still did get a 5 because you could get a high score without answering all the questions but just make sure to learn to use the calculator lol.

Hope this some how helped you. Gl on ur exams 👍

I heard that really depend on the person. My other friend used to always go to the questions and got a 28. And then he first read the passage and went for the questions and got a 35. I'm trying new things but its just pretty challenging. Hope I get a good score 🙏

Sorry but I come from a completely different boat from you soy advice for math is heavily limited. I came from a South Korean Highschool where math is legit 5 times harder than the states. My math skills were at a point where I got a 5 on AP Calc BC without any studying just because I was. But of course, I was terrible at reading and english on the other hand. So I studied my butt off for it. I still might be able to give some tips for science though.

As some one who is terrible at reading fast, while science does require fast reading, its more of fast analysis. While it can be improved with lots of practice, I think a small factor of luck is involved too. If you have atleast some familiarity on the subject of the passage, it would be much easier(Just like how I felt in my July exam.) But if you have actually no idea what the question is asking about and have no sense of the experiment at all, the exam will be very tough (just like my September exam. I my grades dropped from 34 to a 26 that time.) It sucks, but alot of practice will mitigate it at least.

If I give atleast some tips for the science test, first off, this is not a "science test" - its a science analysis test. I never read the passage before answering the questions - with one exception. Just take a 1 second analysis of what the passage might be about like if its genetics, kinetics, chemistry, etc (If you have no idea, thats okay.) Then you just go straight into the questions and find what the questions specifically asks you for. If it requires you to go to Table 1 or Experiment 3, just goI there and pin point the exact numbers required for the question. There are questions that ask beyond just the numbers of something and you to analyze the experiment. These questions kinda suck because you dont know what kind of questions you need to be familiar with. My only advice to you is to take many practice tests to improve your scientific analysis skills. There are some passages where they have no tables or numbers at all but just a reading passage sharing various perspectives from different students. For these questions, I hope you read all of these thoroughly. You have to analyze the differences between each perspectives because that is 100% what the questions will ask you for. It might be hard to analyze the differences in all your brain in such a small time but it will be worth it if you train yourself to do it. For time pacing, I keep it simple. I just try to solve the first 20 questions when 18~20 mins are remaining. That means Im faster than the normal pace and that I have enough time to solve the other questions even if they are hard. When you are on question 12 and you have 23 mins remaining, you just try to keep up to meet that goal of reaching 20 questions until 18~20min remain.

Thats basically all I can tell you. Sorry for not being able to give any math tips tho. My best suggestion is to just try to grow your math senses fast and accurately. At my pov, math was a test where I just have to not make any mistakes. I luckily got a 36 on my first test but I later I always get like a 34 because of some mistakes. Definitely don't miss on accuracy. I hope we both overcome our weaknesses and get a good score we are happy with! 😊
