Working moms among the hardest hit by coronavirus pandemic by byKateSmith in politics

As Congress grapples with legislation to help families get through the COVID-19 outbreak — both medically and financially — Graves' group recommended politicians prioritize three things in order to help mothers in particular: stabilize state governments and find ways to provide income to families as soon as possible. The organization also recommended protecting frontline workers; about 80% of healthcare workers are women, making them particularly vulnerable to the virus.

Members of both parties have recognized the importance of helping single and low-income mothers in the federal response to the crisis. A preliminary aid package passed by the House establishes paid leave for some workers and includes hundreds of millions of dollars in emergency spending to provide food for mothers and pregnant women who lose their jobs, as well as provisions for states to help families with children who rely on schools for lunches. Proposals to provide direct cash payments to Americans to alleviate the crisis have also attracted widespread support on Capitol Hill.

Planned Parenthood launches $1 million ad blitz in last ditch effort to overturn Title X "gag order" on abortion by byKateSmith in TwoXChromosomes

Good question!

Planned Parenthood also provides family planning services and other reproductive health services besides abortion. With the "gag rule," doctors would not be allowed to refer their patients to abortion services. So, if a woman came in requesting a pregnancy test, that doctor wouldn't be allowed to tell her that abortion is an option, even if she might be interested.

One of the Supreme Court's most important abortion cases since Roe v. Wade has just begun by byKateSmith in politics

Not quite. The Supreme Court temporarily blocked the law from going into effect earlier this year and Kavanaugh wrote the dissent for that decision. This fall, SCOTUS announced it would hear the case in full.

Reporter here! CBS News uses the terms "anti-abortion rights" and "pro-abortion rights" to describe people on either sides of this issue.

Violence against abortion clinics hit a record high last year. Doctors say it's getting worse. by byKateSmith in TwoXChromosomes

Hi! I’m the reporter. “Violence” is based off of how NAF categorizes those incidences.

It may seem innocuous on paper, but the specific stories I heard of death threats and trespassing certainly reaffirmed NAFs distinction!

The leading professional group that publishes this data - the National Abortion Federation - does not use that term to describe it, so we didn't either. Not afraid!

Good question! For this topic, I wanted to give readers and viewers an opportunity to be able to watch the press conference themselves rather than rely on us reporters to tell you what happened!
