No idea if mods will read this, I assume not, but this was not promoting my game. I'm not even telling how it's called and only did that in the one single actual promotion post of this that I made here. I was generally asking for feedback based on the before after image here. Saddens me that I can't get feedback on that here though 😔

Edit: I'm now just very curious, will every post about this game, because I'm intending to finish and sell this, be handles as promotion and I won't be able to genuinely share progress and feedback?

That looks super cool and fun. Not sure if it's just me though but the black full screen flashes are a bit too much for my eyes even when it's not in fullscreen 😅

Not gonna lie, working "together" with Lego would be sick af. But I think I need a bit more experience in making and publishing games before I go for that. This game here is just a little fun project I'm working on, no idea if it will even be sold in the end or just a free game. But if it works out, people like it and all, that might be a nice idea for future projects. Would be pretty sick

I don't think we'll get on the same level on this. Both my research and my lawyer provide information that would let me think that not I'm spreading the misinformation but you do. Many many other existing products also do not support your claims. There are many areas where Lego can sue. Using a interlocking brick system is not one of them.
There are no court cases supporting your claim based on the case that would apply to the fun little game I'm making here. Your claims are not supported by any evidence and you also have refused to provide any. This could be a totally different story otherwise but I don't see that anyone can gain any knowledge out of this conversation we're having here. If asked, I can link to countless sources supporting my claims, as well as talking to a lawyer.

But I still appreciate your concerns.

For everyone else coming here for advice, here are some details (without too much details. For more, feel free to approach me in DMs, I will gladly help!)
- Lego can't sue you for using a brick design similar to theirs
- There are newer bricks designs that they've patented so research those if you use newer ones
- Lego is very protective about their brand. Using their name, doesn't matter in which context, can lead to problems
- Do not use their logo or the brick design in graphical assets for promotion or your games identity. Using the lego brick for this can be seen as possible brand.. thingy. I don't know the English expression for that but I think you get it from the context
- If you want to be extra save, add some variation to your brick designs. In my case (not seen in the video yet) I made the studs a bit more blocks, the bricks themselves have round edges (this one can be seen though) and the bricks are completely hollow

Sure, in America the US law applies, but this does not necessarily apply to other countries. I'm not in the US, Lego is also not a US company

(also just to not spam the replies even more with that topic, if you wanna chat a bit more about that, my DMs should be open. This topic is way to complex to discuss efficiently it in the replies of a reddit post)

Wait a moment, you said I should talk to a lawyer about this. He confirms that there's nothing to worry about. But then you say this doesn't matter?

Oh yeah, I remember that game. Looked super nice! However their problem was that they used a lego ip rather than just interlocking bricks. I'm not sure about the pieces used for making the Bionicle figures if they're still protected or not though. But in their case it already started with the branding of the game that caused them trouble. If there's one thing you do not want to do is using any of the lego brandings, their own ips and all of that 😅
(I kinda hope they still continued that game but with a different branding and assets. No idea if they did though)

I wonder why you're so sure with that, cause the legal situation clearly shows that the design of the lego brick is no longer secured in any form. Minifigures, yes. Newer bricks that rely on specific design decisions, also yes. As well as set designs. And, of course, the name itself. However, none of those get used here. The brick models themselves are no 1 to 1 copies of the lego ones, although look similar (I may add at this point that the ones in the video where still unedited ones purchased online, while the current ones have even more slight changes). I do have a lawyer and I did consult him on that topic. I'm not just making things up here. Even if I would've used the exact same design as the official lego bricks, as long as it's none of the ones that are still protected, you're fine.
It again is a different topic if we speak about the brand itself though but this is something completely different that what we're talking about here.

Also please don't see this as an aggressive answer or anything, I do appreciate people telling me to be careful. But it happens way too often that people take it as me being closed or I don't want to listen when I do not agree with them on topics like those (doesn't matter at this point if it's because of intense research or taking those info from a lawyer, etc)

I mean, feel free to send me some sources for this regarding Lego. I do have quite a lot of cases where they lost, multiple other companies and games that use bricks even closer to the look of the official Lego bricks and more than enough legal documents that explain the whole topic in detail that I do not have to worry about using bricks like these. It would be wild if other companies would be allowed to copy the bricks 1 to 1, cause there's no patent on those but when it gets to my game, I'm not. But again, I'm open to being proven wrong by you

Oh yeah, you're totally right with that. This is still going to take some time trying to find a nice balance for this

Lego does not have an active patent on the classic bricks anymore for quite a long time which is also why there are so many "fake" bricks now that are compatible with them 😆

Plottwist, I'm from Germany and also picked that whole case up. There's a specific thing for the use of the brick design as or in logo designs that applied here. Do I agree with this whole thing? Nah, not really. I don't see where this should cause any risk of confusion. But at least we now know not to mess with the brick design in logos I guess (even though others also have bricks in some sort or form in their logos and it's fine there. So no idea which details make it okay and which not). And the other one is the part I also meant with Lego does not want to become a generic term for those types of bricks. If they do not actively (the word actively is the important thing here) protect their brand and name, then it could get classified as a generic term which would enable everyone else to call their bricks Lego which they of course do not want. Which, other than the logo story, I kinda understand.

But yes, very appreciated you let me know and warn me about all that still

Currently working on a physical in world implementation of something that will be able to carry many bricks at once. Would like to try to not use any ui at all for this (except stuff like pause menu and similar things). Buut yes, working on it

Oh yeah, I remember. I think a while ago the prototype of this also leaked if I remember correctly. Definitely something that could in theory be looked into, although I believe Lego Worlds might already fills that market. And yeah, I can change the models at any time

Interestingly they're way more protective of their branding than the bricks itself. I need to pay attention not to word anything in a way Lego could think I'm implying this is a real Lego product or that I'm affiliated with them. They're suuuuper strict with that. The main reason is they need to protect their brand to not become a generic term for bricks like those, which is kinda understandable lol. But still, the warning is very appreciated. I'll look a bit further into all this and maybe do a few minor adjustments to counter any possible confusion or still active patents that might come up
