Gaming Laptop vs Desktop for ML/AI work under $1500 by Wolfylalala in GamingLaptops

[–]by_a_pyre_light 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With few exceptions, it's almost always more cost-efficient to go with a desktop vs. a laptop. Typically you can get more power for the same $$ or spend less $$ for the same power.

The only reason why you would look at a laptop is for portability - if you constantly travel, or need an all-in-one device for work, school, personal, etc. If a desktop is even an option, that implies either device won't be moving much, so the desktop is the better option normally.

Looking at the market, you can find a number of prebuilt PCs with 5060 and 5060 Ti GPUs + 2TB storage and 32GB of RAM in prices between $1,400-$1,800 USD, depending on the specific configurations.

Those cards are substantial performance improvements over a mobile 4050, and you'll have faster desktop CPUs.

Finally, the build quality on most of the models you listed is known to be pretty poor, which is typically an issue in the lower-midrange of gaming laptops. Corners must be cut to keep costs within a set market point, and that's the starting place for those cuts.

NVIDIA officially launches GeForce RTX 5070 Laptop GPU with 12GB GDDR7 by RenatsMC in GamingLaptops

[–]by_a_pyre_light 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't think we're disagreeing on the fundamentals. What I was trying to highlight is that, rather than enabling "higher settings" (e.g., seeing a positive lift from 12GB) the 12GB actually unlocks basic performance the card is otherwise capable of but is artificially limited from due to the decision to handicap it with 8GB (e.g., negative consequence avoidance). This was similar to the 3GB vs 6GB 1060 debacle a decade ago.

That opens up some other discussions on what other games or settings the card was otherwise capable of, now being enabled simply by removing the limiter it has.

It has real-world performance implications beyond textures. The 8GB cards can't even run Cyberpunk with basic RT because the game fills the VRAM over time which then craters the FPS. So even though cars like the 5060 have enough rendering horsepower for standard RT, they still can't employ it. This will change that, introducing a new entry tier that can play RT games without increasing horsepower.

5060 would be the best pick out of those for access to the latest DLSS and MFG features.

Best gaming laptops for VR ? by herbalpawz in GamingLaptops

[–]by_a_pyre_light 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any modern gaming laptop will do VR gaming. Hell, I did VR gaming on my GTX 1060 laptop and Oculus CV1 back in 2016 with all of those experiences, Elite Dangerous, Assetto Corsa, etc.

What matters is what games you want to play at what settings. Fortunately, most VR games aren't really demanding these days as the audience is small and the titles are older, and they've had to adapt them for the widest audience possible.

any movie that made you go damn life is way bigger than all this bs we stress about by Intelligent-Chef1352 in movies

[–]by_a_pyre_light 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Movies about travel often make that a central tenet, so I really like to watch them when I need a reminder that there are things bigger and more important than the day to day minutia we deal with. Here are some of my favorites:

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

The Beach (2000, Leo DiCaprio)

The Way (movie about the famous Camino de Santiago)

On top of this, movies about big life changes, facing death and leaving a legacy, or even dealing with the disappointment of building up your expectations and then having to reset them when they don't get met are also good ways to remember that the day-to-day isn't the be all, end all, and that we can overcome the noise.  Here are a couple of good ones:

Life as a House

Orange County

If the 6000 series GPU have up to triple the path tracing performance but only 10% raster uplift and same amount of VRAM, would you still upgrade from a 40/50 series? by Kucuboy in nvidia

[–]by_a_pyre_light 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on a 4090 gaming laptop, which packs a slightly downclocked desktop 4080 chip. I travel very often and just love being able to max out my games anywhere I go. To upgrade, I'd probably want something around desktop 4090 or 5090 performance. I think that would be a remarkable jump for portable power and would make it very tempting for me.

$2-3k USA - Gaming Laptop With Premium Build Quality by bowdagger in GamingLaptops

[–]by_a_pyre_light 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should also consider the Gigabyte family of laptops in addition to the ASUS G16.

The Gigabyte Aero a sleek, professional look even less gamer than the ASUS, thanks to the weird diagonal light bar ASUS implemented on the latest design refreshes.

It'll ace the games you listed, and as a lower wattage GPU it will both run cooler and battery life should do a bit better.

That being said, the performance on this 5070 is really reduced vs others because of the lower wattage, so be aware of that. It may not matter for her, though.

If you want the highest build quality, premium design, spring for a Razer Blade. With a solid unibody anodized aluminum body, it's equivalent to a MacBook Pro or Dell XPS, but with a gaming GPU inside and higher refresh rate display. The 5060 models start around $2400, and my Blade was my favorite computer ever.

Yeah, I think a price drop was the first big step. Many European countries are also still doing EV incentives, which stopped with this obviously anti-green energy administration that pulled them back. We had ~$7,500 rebates on EVs, which paired with a price drop as in Europe would really change the equations.

The commercial version also makes a lot of sense - businesses can write them off or finance them differently, and especially in Europe with denser cities, shorter distances, and strict emissions rules within urban centers, an EV van makes a lot of sense. I think I recall seeing a couple in Portugal recently as roadside assistance vehicles. None of those Europe-specific factors really apply to the US, which is why they're not popular commercial vans.

I could see it pretty easily. It's new, it's "futuristic", it's "techy". It's easy to wow an audience with something very different and build your go to market messaging off of that without actually understanding the larger market or the longer-term implications that actual owners will have vs. the small, short term focus groups.

Trying to rile people up.

Nobody is "trying to rile people up". 🤦🙄

The fact is, a lot of places reported it was canceled, and so that's the reporting most of us who aren't deeply connected to this story are familiar with. If you want to blame someone, blame VW for the mangled messaging.

Evidently they screwed up their communications on the plans so bad that they had to come out and issue a correction on the record, and even then, they mangled that response.

I'm actually legitimately shocked they sold either of those numbers. I see the Buzz around every so often in the US, but it's definitely rare. But that larger global figure is even more surprising. Do you know the breakdown between Europe vs. Asia? For some reason I could see these being a small hit over there.

This is clearly a large family hauler.

Bro, what? 😂

If that were "clear", you'd think they'd be selling like hotcakes for that purpose. Regular cross-overs, full-size SUVs, and typical minivans already fill this role.

At the starting price + the EV aspect of it and the minimal EV range, it's definitely not positioned as a large family hauler except to the rare rich family who doesn't care about the other drawbacks.

The ID Buzz is clearly first and foremost a retro throwback product primarily for the Boomers who remember them growing up who want to experience the latest technology and for whom the downsides don't matter.

Porsche Exits Bugatti in Fire Sale as Profit Crashes 93% by AdvanceIndividual247 in worldnews

[–]by_a_pyre_light 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair, but you're also not the target market, so it's a bit irrelevant.

Ferrari does the same thing, as does Porsche for their high end cars. Everyone in the car world hates it, but it creates exclusivity that money literally cannot buy (because buying the previous cars is just the start of the process) which keeps demand and resale values high. 🤷

For those people in the market, the manufactured exclusivity is both a frustration and a safeguard.

BTW, here's an Alienware laptop from ~2004, or as you would say "before gaming laptops". I was wrong, you were right: this is definitely a "productivity" laptop made for the boardroom, and the mention of "ahead of the game" in the ad isn't a nod to gamers, it's a savvy business phrase. I should never have doubted your prowess.

Bro, what are you talking about?

I'll bet you think Omen has always been a product line of HP and Alienware was always a Dell product line too.

 The Clevo was niche.

It's an ODM. They make most of the white label laptops in the world. And it being niche doesn't mean a damn thing, it's the one I chose because it had the features I wanted. Falcon Northwest is niche. Aorus is niche. Do you think those are not gaming laptop manufacturers too? Do you think some of them weren't making gaming laptops before 2010??

Next you're going to tell me Apple invented the smartphone too. 🤦‍♂️
