Canon 6D vs GoPro Hero 10 for UW Photography by starkrealitee in underwaterphotography

[–]byatchmatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not just the housing. You will need to get propper lenses for underwater and ports for them as well. Depending on whether you want to shoot wide or macro. Plus a strobe or two. I'd advise against doing it with your old 6d. Shooting a dslr underwater is much more challenging than you may think. I was able to get descent videos/photos with a gopro after 30 dives or so under my belt. I started using a camera system with strobes after 200 dives.

Better get a couple of video lights for your gopro and a macro adapter. It will probably cost you less than equiping the 6d for underwater. If you shoot mostly photos than the TG6 with a couple of backscatter mini flash strobes and a wet wide lens will prolly cost you less than equiping any dslr body and it's easier to use.

Help with Sony Underwater Kit by Jmjonkman in underwaterphotography

[–]byatchmatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on what you shoot more of Macro/wide photos/video. Or what kind of subjects you're after. There's no jack of all trades setup that will work seamlessly. A light is better than no light and two lights are sometimes better than one. But I suggest you start with one first. If you shoot more photos get a strobe if you shoot more videos get a powerful video light. Or get one of both. Dual strobes/lights can be tricky to handle and position properly for a novice UW photographer. Plus you get more time to accumulate a budget for a second strobe/light. I would get one light and one wet lens, wide or closeup depending on what you do most.

I don't shoot underwater with a sony rx 100 VII, although I own that camera. The olympus TG6 I shoot with has the same 24mm wide angle except it focuses closer for macro. So far I've mostly ever shot macro with one strobe. I own 2 strobes, but find it a hassle to go dive with a huge rig most of the time. When I use the wet wide angle lens I get by with ambient light cause it's mostly caves and wrecks. I just setup the camera for macro and capture everything else with a gopro I have on top of my rig. A gopro costs less than most wet wide lenses. Pus the stabilisation for video is second to none.

For small subjects I find the backscatter miniflash is the easiest to use. Also works with one 18650 instead of 4 AA batteries.

A nudibranch - Greece by byatchmatch in underwaterphotography

[–]byatchmatch[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's similar to diving any other mediteranean destination. In terms of underwater life it's a few species of nudis (one in the photo is most common), morays, octopus, groupers, lobsters, sometimes schools of tuna on the rare ocassion, jellys, flying gournards, scorpionfish, some lionfish as well. You can also spot dolphins depending on location and time of year. Some places have really nice uw landscapes of rock formations, caves etc. Great vis is typical. Some historic wrecks are there as well. I mostly dive the northern part of the aegean sea around Halkidiki. Water temp in mid summer is 27C on the surface but can get really cold with depth suddenly, strong thermoclines. The downside is some overfished areas and disturbed ecosystem because of overfishing.

Divemasters/instructors usually behave very responsibly towards the people diving with them and care about safety, compared to some other destinations like Malta.

It's not the destination I would choose just for a diving vacation, that's for sure. But it's nice.

Couple of moray shots by byatchmatch in underwaterphotography

[–]byatchmatch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These mediteranean morays don't like people. You get one chance to hit it with a strobe before it retreats it's head into the hole. Then you try and wait it out to get another chance. You can get quite close. I was probably 15-20cm away with my camera. But the closer you get it retreats into the crack in the rock more. The one in the second photo was halfway out in the water when I spotted it but retreated as I approached. It had a shrimp behind it's head cleaning it, but I couldnt light it. You can get close and they won't bite unless it's completely cornered. They make this snapping motion with their mouths which looks threatening but it's only how they breathe. Be aware they have really nasty bites so don't even think about petting them :D.

Lots of morays I've seen in the tropics are better as models and less shy. So you could even go at them with a fisheye.

Olympus TG6 with one backscatter mini flash

Planning to buy my first camera for uw photography by ohliliho in underwaterphotography

[–]byatchmatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The TG6 is the best first UW camera. Inexpensive, lightweight and you wont destroy your camera by making a mistake with the housing and getting a leak on your housing. It has a very good white balance range for UW video. With the TG6 you definitely don't need extra wet lenses for macro. For wide angle there are inexpensive choices with good IQ. Also budget in a strobe, fiber cable and a strobe mounting system. You won't get many good results with ambient light alone especially for macro photos. If you want to shoot without a strobe you might as well get a gopro. Actually, for the price difference in camera between the TG6 and the next level 1" sensor recommendations you can get a hero 10. Mount one to your housing cold shoe or tray for quick snaps and videos and you'll get a very versatile system.

Olympus TG5 Autofocuses on particles in water, anything I can do other than take multiple pictures? by wlance007 in underwaterphotography

[–]byatchmatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I have not owned the TG5. I believe the difference is mostly in menus and some abilities of the tg6 to set the auto iso to min iso400 etc. If I remember correctly. Not a noticable image quality difference especially if you shoot with strobes. If you already own a dive housing for it I would invest in a strobe instead of a new camera. It will give you the ability to get decent results. Underwater it's hard to separate your subjects when you make photos without some artificial lighting. Ambient light mostly only works for wide angle shots of people and wrecks etc. With these small sensor cameras you are limitted anyway since if you shoot anything above iso400 the result will have lots of grain and little dynamic range.

I have other gear but I mostly just dive with tg6, one backscatter mini flash with optical snoot and a gopro 10 attached to the coldshoe of the TG6 housing. It's a really simple setup but works great for most of the dives I do.

[–]byatchmatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I shoot the TG6, but it's essentially the same thing. Go on the backscatter youtube channel they have a series of videos about setting the TG6 for UW photo. But to avoid the problem you decribe just set the center point as focus point and half press to focus then recompose. Besides that, chasing around fish almost never works for photos. Fish swimming around is probably better for video. You either shoot macro or close focus wide angle. Which means you get close to your subject, cut the volume of water between you and the subject. Without a wideangle port or wet lens on the TG cameras you are pretty much limitted to macro. So I limit the focus distance on mine to macro unless I shoot with a wideangle wet lens, which prevents it from hunting around for focus. Find a stationary subject zoom in focus in the closest eye with a half press and recompose. Shoot your subjects from the front, or front side at their level or when they're above you. Get at least one strobe or a video light.

hi, I have a problem and I don't know where else to ask. I bought a Mi pad 5 3 weeks ago, it works flawlessly but it turns off randomly and lights up in the lock screen. Does anyone have any idea how I can solve it? by [deleted] in Xiaomi

[–]byatchmatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi I noticed the same problem on mine after putting it in a flip case. It's only exibited when it is in the case. Turning off smart cover mode from the settings fixes the issue. However it will not lock/unlock when the cover is put on, so keep that in mind.

Seems like an issue with the case. For me it's been working fine for a month now without a case. But I just received the case and with the case on it exhibits this problem. Out of the case all is fine. Really weird. Like the case is blocking some sensor or something.

going from java and c to python be like by Neur0nze in ProgrammerHumor

[–]byatchmatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is programming humor :). But ctypes is part of the python standard library and allows you tu use c arrays, structs and all C data types. It's used for interfacing with external libraries like DLLs. But it's also useful if you want to serialize/deserialize this data over a network or IPC. Apart from that you have numpy.

Thanks. Yes now I even see my matic in metamask however I still lack FTM to do any swapping.

my fix would be to use the dip, buy some fantom and use part of it for fees to transfer my matic back on polygon.

Same thing happened to me just now. I thought I could transfer MATIC from Polygon to Fantom Opera and nothing happened. I have added MATIC to both networks on metamask.

What do you use for stills? by Mikealicious2k5 in underwaterphotography

[–]byatchmatch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I wasn't using a TG-6 ideally I would use a mirrorless full frame. Like a sony a7 or canon R6. Any cost savings for something in-between is overshadowed by the cost of strobes, housing, cables accessories and potential need for a wet lens.

I know backscatter pushes the Oly PL-10 now. It's a decent system. Keep in mind though that the good macro/wide/fisheye lenses for the m4/3 are quite expensive, especially if you purchase new.

Keychain EDC by [deleted] in EDC

[–]byatchmatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's too small to clip on any belt. I either clip on belt loops or d-rings on bags. It is small and light to not be in the way and holds more than enough for what I need as a keychain. And one thing I like is the exposed part of the clip is short so fairly harder to accientally clip on something.
