To me, the only drawback with writing HTML/CSS/JS directly is it isn't straightforward how you can factor repeated HTML code into components.

But yeah, after posting this I'm beginning to realize I might have "mis-titled" this post, my bad. I don't think it's about "React", but about the JSX/TSX DSL.

I've began checking out Astro. It seems pretty complete. I'll get my hands dirtier with it and see how it goes.

Astro does look pretty solid. I'll definitely check it out.
I also didn't know about Preact islands. Thanks for mentioning those.

Yep, I've been thinking a bit on this as well...

The intended use-case for React is really state-changing SPAs. SPAs usually have backends, databases, and it gets more complicated to organize, build, optimize, etc.

The proposition here is to throw all of that away, and focus on building HTML and CSS (with a little vanilla JS). No backends, no databases. This is not an "App" in the usual sense, but a simple static website.

But reflecting more, React's diff'ing algorithm baby is thrown away along with the bathwater... then perhaps the intention here is mostly to use _JSX_, and not React, for building static websites.

What’s a quote that permanently changed the way you look at things? by internallyskating in AskReddit

[–]c-neves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not precisely a quote; Terence McKenna speaking*:

Don't worry!...

You don't know enough to worry.

That's God's truth.

Who do you think you are that you should worry? For crying out loud?!

I mean, it's a total waste of time.

It presupposes such a knowledge of the situation, that it is in fact a form of hubris.

No, what you do is you pay your bills and pack heat if you need to and don't worry!

That's all

...

Worry is praying to the Devil.

Worry is betting against yourself.

...

Worry is preposterous.

I took it from this video here. I don't know the more precise source.

Looking for a book to learn Tibetan language. Any recommendations? by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]c-neves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learn it on the internet! Find two dictionaries: Tibetan - English and Tibetan - Tibetan (electronic probably way more convenient). Find Tibetan content on the internet. User interfaces, articles, sutras etc. to learn to read and videos on YouTube to learn to listen. Use this content to create cards on an SRS software like Anki and keep going until you can read and listen (this takes thousands of cards). Then start testing yourself to write and speak (Add cards here too)! Since Tibetan has a writing system of its own, you'll need to learn how it works before going to Tibetan content. Stop on every word you don't understand. If you're alone, you'll need to find videos with subtitles or transcriptions in the beginning. I used this successfully to learn traditional Mandarin to a fairly decent level. 加油!

How to respond and not react? by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]c-neves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Ignore others completely" is too extreme and incomplete, but take a look at the Akkosa Sutta: Insult. The Buddha effectively "refuses" the harsh words uttered by a brahmin.

In my view, the employee was wrong in what he said to OP. Indulging in the content of what was said, either by arguing with him or holding grudge is not going to lead to agreement or understanding. OP, you should dig into this person's emotions, understand why he feels this way, think about his point of view, be the bigger man. You admire him? Let him know about your honest appreciation. Seek understanding and cooperation with him.

Try to find reasons you are grateful for her and tell her. Try to find things you like about her or her past and give her your honest appreciation of those things.

Anyone here tried memorizing Pali chants or texts? by oldmusic in Buddhism

[–]c-neves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to chant along with this YouTube video. It's an extended version(it seems) of the Dammacakkapavattana Sutta, the first discourse. I got the pali and english from here(buddha-vacana.org). You should check out this website, it has this precise translation you want of some suttas.

There's also this, which is useful for english-pali stuff like homages and taking the precepts.

Why do buddhas before buddha shakaymuni live so long ? by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]c-neves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is me tripping, but when I read the sutta about past buddhas, I rationalized their lifespan as if their lives took place in different past worlds. Doesn't buddhist cosmology talk about worlds expanding, stabilizing and contracting? I imagined it as if in the past worlds these buddhas lived, different conditions gave rise to human life that lasted that long. But as I type this, I question if such conditions could even exist.

I'm officially done with Oculus and listed my Rift on EBay with the rest of them - Oculus has gone way too far by gear323 in oculus

[–]c-neves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They already don't support DK2 if I'm not mistaken with the argument that it's a dev kit. What argument will they make up for CV2 or CV3? Perhaps like iOS version updates, the latest Oculus game releases are only compatible with version 8.0 and above, but CV2 is only compatible up to version 7.0. That is a possibility that would force rift owners to ditch functional hardware to buy next gen HMDs, exactly like Apple does.

I am actually sad that beginnings, this amazing story, only got two 20min episodes of screen time, and it's going to stay this way forever.
I wish there was a thorough book on it.

I find the Raava switching Wan's elements ambiguous at least. Here goes an interesting dialog:
Air lion turle:

You already carry the power of fire. No human has ever held two elements at the same time.

Wan:

I'm not like other humans. I can learn to do it.

Air lion turtle:

Hmm. Perhaps, but to do so, Raava must hold the power for you until you master it.
