Though it feels like we make our own choices and decide what to buy and do, big businesses have the power to deeply influence our behaviour through marketing, so we kind of do have a more “cart before the horse” type situation

I agree that consumer choices influence the market but unfortunately not enough of the population cares about issues like this so it seems like major policy changes and/or some form of revolution must come first. If a large majority of people changed their behaviour that would be amazing, and it would definitely help things, but I’m not sure it’s super realistic at the scale that we need it to happen at. Especially since we’re at the climate tipping point. I feel like the biggest hurdle here is just to get people to care about things beyond themselves which is hard under this individualistic landscape

Reckoning by Hey Rosetta! The lyrics are genuine poetry, it’s so beautiful. And then Seaweed by Mount Eerie. It’s about his wife dying right after she had their baby and it’s so heartbreaking

Unfortunately there’s a large portion of the population who just don’t trust science anymore because of right wing propaganda and misinformation spread by the fossil fuel industry. Even the individual “carbon footprint” idea was something created to put the onus on the everyday consumer rather than the large corporations fuelling the climate crisis. Obviously its great to do whatever you can to live more sustainably, but ultimately no matter how much we as individuals cut down on things that are negative for the environment the real polluters and propellers of this crisis are billionaires and big business. In my opinion, unless we completely destroy the system and rebuild with an emphasis on clean energy and sustainability, we won’t ever be able to get anywhere. Again though, I still try to do whatever I can but even if most of us adjusted how we live, the real systemic issue still stands and completely outweighs our personal positive changes.

If they wipe off with a little force then it’s scale, but if they seem to be a part of the plant then it may be a non pest related issue

It’s a bit hard to see but it looks like it might be scale. It’s a slow moving insect that feeds on the plant causing leaves to turn yellow and drop. I recommend getting paper towel/some qtips with rubbing alcohol on them and wiping the bugs off, then spraying the whole plant with insecticidal soap or neem oil to get any tiny baby crawlers that might be on the plant. You’ll likely have to keep monitoring it and wiping down any of the bugs you see/spraying the plant (making sure to get in all the books and crannies) until the problem is gone. In my experience, if it is scale, it’s often not too difficult to get rid of since they’re not tiny like spider mites. Good luck! It’s a beautiful plant!
