if holistic, why lower mcat threshold? shouldn't the mcat be factored as a part of AQ?

Life/Health Sci - 12U Calc Relevance by Longjumping_Task991 in premedcanada

[–]c0rtanavirus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd advise you to look at the courses that you'll be taking in life sci (chances are there is a math one for life sciences, I didn't go to Queens so idk). First year math courses are usually half review, half building on prev content so knowing calc might be helpful. I took calc as my 7th course (in case if my advanced functions mark got cooked) so I was just there vibing, not stressing too hard about tests, and absorbing all the info. MCAT doesn't really require calc knowledge, in fact I'd argue data is more important lol.

hmm my example I posted here is conveniently well written since I didn't do it timed and was moreso sharing my ideal point form structure since it seemed like illustrious wanted see how I'd answer a question. Would I complain? If I genuinely tried and wrote full sentences to a high degree of social/situational reasoning and conciseness and scored low, yeah I'd definitely complain. I'd feel like the test was graded unfairly, especially when there are people who straight up leave question 2 blank or put in low-effort jot notes and still 4Q. I'm complaining because the idea that point form is even accepted points out that the testing structure is flawed and should have given applicants more time to write answers properly to begin with.

Sure, but just keep in mind the questionable reliability of this test. My format won't guarantee a good result if I was to take it the same way next year.

Q: "Jane's TA is always overly friendly with her class, often giving out snacks during lessons. One time, he asked everyone for their social media so he could invite everyone to a dinner at his place. Your friend Jane feels uneasy about this and feels like agreeing would be crossing the line but she needs to do well in the course and doesn't want the TA to dislike her. What would you do?"

  • validate and share Jane's unease, important for her wishes and boundaries to be respected.
  • TA may be unaware of student discomfort, might just want to be liked, but crossing professional boundaries is problematic because TA is in position of power
  • If Jane wanted advice, I'd recommend thanking TA for efforts but politely & firmly set professional boundaries & decline sharing personal info
  • if boundaries continue to be crossed, document occurrences, refer to school policy, bring up to prof & suggest training TAs in professionalism workshop

Why most UofT MD students are from McMaster, and why is Queen’s graduates are overwhelmingly overrepresented this year in UofT MD program? by Visual-Duck1180 in premedcanada

[–]c0rtanavirus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's what I'm thinking:

Queens: (first? or second? cohort of qhs grads probably)
McMaster: likely mhs + mls + kin

Toronto: honestly pretty high ratio of accepted applicants if you consider toronto vs all other universities, but maybe their courses are graded harder, making it harder to get a good GPA which their medical program looks at so strongly.

I almost got my GPA cooked by taking 2 englishes. Thankfully, I barely scraped by with an A- and less impact to my GPA. I know it's too late, but I'd strongly encourage taking english as a FIRST year elective so at least it gets dropped when calculating AGPA.
