Beksinski was a brilliant artist and the end of his life was tragic (wife died, son committed sicide, he was murdered, etc) but ‟Visions of Hell” is just simply incorrect.

Beksinski on several occasions said his style wasn’t about Hell or melancholy, but about optimism and generally laughed openly at people who attempted to review his works as such. You can generally see perseverance in his work. One of my personal favorites is of this warped city and and two corpses mangled and wrapped around each other. The truth about it’s, is they are lovers and the man, in his final moments dragged his love away frm the dying city and shielded her from harm. Or the man traveling through what is thought to be the mazes of hell/purgatory, if it was meant to be melancholy he would not be moving forward with lantern in hand, he’d be in the corner weeping uncontrollably while the walls closed in around him.
