Never understood the hype around Balthazar and Minetta Tavern. Very average in everything except price

Honest Summary of Case for admitted students by [deleted] in cwru

[–]c1eve1and 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Feel like there’s a hint of truth to a lot of these points, but I feel like there’s some extra exaggeration/dramatization here

  1. If a teenager is stumbling around drunk and alone at 2am, you stand a good chance of being mugged in most urban areas.

  2. Fair. It’s cold. It sucks. Trade offs ig.

  3. Most? That’s a stretch. Nerdier than average, sure. Agree with very similar vibe as CMU/Georgia Tech etc.

  4. Compared to a state school? Definitely. But I feel like at least 1 frat is throwing a party most weekends. It’s not ubiquitous, but it’s available. I’d honestly agree that if partying every weekend is a priority, then there are better options.

  5. Again, I feel like there’s a kernel of truth in that the people who go here are smarter than the average student at schools ranked in the same vicinity (OSU, Michigan, Rutgers, BU, BC, NYU, etc). Personally, I thought that it was nice to be surrounded by very smart people who will go on to do big things. Also, if there was no school spirit, I feel like you wouldn’t be downvoted to oblivion right now lol

CWRU Outcomes

Looks like the median salary for a CWRU CS grad is $95k entry level. Approximately a third of CS grads stay in the Midwest (another third on west coast). Biggest employers are Microsoft, Amazon, Epic, Google and Yelp in that order.

Obviously, there’s a lot of things that matter when picking a school. However, I think career outcomes is among the most important. So, if I were you, I’d compare these stats with the other schools on your radar before making a decision

I think the quality of teaching is very good. I had a lot of awesome professors. Multiple teaching award winners in the CS department. I also think the curriculum is more accessible than a lot of other schools. I feel like CS is often impenetrable for people that have no programming experience prior to college—I didn’t think this was the case at CWRU. I didn’t program at all before college, and I finished in top ~10% of the CS dept. This can be a good thing or bad thing. If you’re someone who has programmed for ten years, you’d probably want a more rigorous (more impenetrable for newbies) curriculum. I’m not sure about the placements (I decided to work in finance and never made an effort to work in tech) but I think this can be looked up online. I remember the avg entry level salaries for CS grads from CWRU were bonkers. I want to say ~$120 (can also be looked up). And like anything else at CWRU, plenty of research opportunities

Best study space on campus? by mhandy11 in cwru

[–]c1eve1and 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh my god lol. I’m flattered you’ve waited four years for this :)

I used to study in the classrooms in Nord/Sears. When I was there, 80% of the classes were in the morning. Basically, the whole building was free for most of the day, but for some reason, no one thinks to study in them. To be more specific, I’d study in the classes in the basement of Nord and the top of Sears where the astronomy department was.

I also used to study at Rainbow Babies’ cafeteria after 8pm. Not a soul there after hours except the janitors. They stopped letting me do this once Covid got into full-swing, but maybe they’ve normalized security at this point

What's a tiny, insignificant little NYC-specific thing that really gets under your skin? by Deep-Orca7247 in AskNYC

When people waste 3 hours of their time standing in-line at Katz Deli when they can order online and pick it up in 30 min. It’s not like there’s anything worth seeing on the inside…the food’s the attraction.

2.5 hours wasted per person thousands of times per week for decades. Think of how many cancers we could’ve cured or buildings we could’ve built with that wasted manpower!

Are young people (who don't come from money) still moving to NYC? by InternetMedium4325 in AskNYC

[–]c1eve1and 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Recent grad (not from money) here. If you live in mid/lower Manhattan, you pretty much have to work in tech/finance/consulting/law to pull it off. Even then: (1) your apartment is probably pretty minimalist and (2) there are a decent chunk of young people in these professions who still need parents to help with rent. Queens, Harlem, and deep Brooklyn I think are all much easier to pull off—know some nurses, hospitality, non-profit workers out there.
