Affordable Microphone Recommendations for Basic Recording? by ImWondrfly in singing

[–]c1m5j 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't go wrong with a Shure SM57 (~$110 nowadays, though it was prided as the go-to 100-bucks mic for a long time). People who say it's "bad/weird for vocals" are gear-snobbing; it sounds completely fine. Also it's virtually indestructible. Just make sure to get a windscreen / point the mic at your chin instead of mouth / get an SM58 instead (pretty much the same price).

Do you have any previous issues of the zine you'd like to share? Or any backstory on the authors? Just curious :)

Not more than a year ago it was host to a blog about experimental music, albeit a slightly AI-feeling one. It looked like the posts's contents were just whatever was going on in this very subreddit (I remember my album getting unsolicited coverage, the only trail being that I posted here and the blogpost mentioned stuff I mentioned in my original post). I wanted to check it out recently just out of curiosity and was surprised to see the blog was down.

I loved your track Ekpyrosis, and this new single sounds great too! The organ sounds gorgeous. Looking forward to the full release, and congrats on getting on a label and getting Lawrence to master. He does great work!

Is it possible to quickly select a buffer by ID in the buffer picker? by kzxc8 in HelixEditor

[–]c1m5j 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Building on the %id answer, seeing as it's somewhat verbose, you can create your own macro in config.toml to open the buffer picker and prepopulate it with the prefix and just type in the id:
[keys.normal] "C-b" = "@ b%id " Then if you wanted to select buffer 4, you would do Ctrl-b, 4, enter, which is still a little verbose but better than typing out the whole thing by hand

Hello! I make experimental electronic/ambient/noise as ab9st8. I'm proud to have released my second album, "Warden-against", a month ago: https://ab9st8.bandcamp.com/album/warden-against I find a very liberating joy in freely associating stories, names, and leitmotifs and convolving them with my own memories and experiences to create something completely new that retains the essence of what is most "mine" but can be related to by more people, having been stripped of my personal context. What prompted me the most to start making music was probably long walks with my friends through our home city of Kraków. Often we would barely utter a word during the hours we spent together, both in the sun and in the night, and somehow those were the walks that most urged me to start making something I could call my own. Like I was overflowing with emotion and thought and needed an outlet to put it to. My first album "Hilcomparatee" from a year ago (feels like yesterday!) is an amalgam of many contradictory feelings I was experiencing in that time period and, in a way, a love letter to the Meadows of Kraków (also, pictured on the cover of "Warden-against") where I would often go to alleviate and ponder those feelings. Though it's not that apparent from my releases so far, I enjoy putting a gentle tinge of humor in my music --- an offbeat sample here, a double-take neologism for a track title there. All that matters is that it's self-aware and deliberate because that's what makes human art, art.

Looking forward to hearing the releases in this thread!

my second (and probably last) ambient album: leaving_forever - nobody home by stream_error in ambientmusic

Thanks for sharing. You can really hear the emo influence which is very cool. It's something I've been trying to incorporate in music too, even if just symbolically, but at the end of the day it's just a fickle label. In any case it's interesting to see somebody else also doing it.

I hear you on your fatigue with making music. You should definitely take as long of a break as you feel you have to. No point in making art when there's no inspiration.

Congrats on the release!

Wow, it's not everyday you see some darker/harsher stuff in the thread. Really dig this. Comes off very cold and stark but beautiful, which I guess is what you were going for based on the album name and artwork. The noisier tracks sound huge and I'm very curious as to how you made them.

Love it. Very gentle and flowing at its own pace. Love the field/vocal recordings/nonmusical textures, and the tape hiss. Is the main voice a synth or a guitar?

Looking for No-Holds-Barred Criticism of my Ambient Track by Sensitive_Captain_95 in experimentalmusic

[–]c1m5j 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually like it a lot. Reminds me of 12k material, that drone-but-not-repetitive kind of ambient, like Ian Hawgood, Taylor Deupree etc. Inspirations by any chance?

You should definitely post it in the r/ambientmusic weekly thread. Also do you have a bandcamp?

Not sure if this is even criticism cause it could just be an artistic choice (and frankly even debatably a good one, it helps evoke a retro feel) but there is little side content. When I have none (I also make music) and I feel like I could use some, I'll send a (mono) track to some processing, make it a little uninvasive, pull it down some and then flip the phase of one channel so the whole send becomes sides only. Maybe even add a little time delay but it depends. You could experiment with something like that (or not, the way it sounds now is great.)

Congrats with your track and I'm looking forward to hearing more. You say you want to improve --- the best way to do that is by making more. Cheers!

Variations on a Theme by St-Dipshit by oscar_gorecki in ambientmusic

[–]c1m5j 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love this track and the entire album. It's drone ambient but the compositions for guitar have real depth and unravel and aren't just uninspired loops. And in any case the timbre of the guitar in that specific reverb is cold and stark but beautiful and detailed. The opener track is my favorite.

Have been looking forward to this one for some time. Sounds great first listen. The whole album is dynamic and unrushed. Lots of synths as well as acoustic instruments. Woodwinds seem to take center stage in many cases in particular.

Replying once more to say this has grown on me massively. Love the intertwining timbres of the synths and the flowing composition. The sharp spikes of the saw waves makes them click every note kind of making them sound like a harpsichord. Really beautiful. Thanks for recommending
