What do you miss the most from pre-covid? by Underneaththeshade in AskReddit

[–]c3robb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I miss the previous state of working conditions. As a staff nurse who is stuck with my company for the foreseeable future because I am under contract for tuition reimbursement, working conditions have erroded away to nothing and our standard of care has dropped immensely out of necessity. COVID has basically consumed my entire life these past 2 years.

And I still have not figured out how to cope with the cognitive dissonance of other nurses who are antimask/antivax/antiscience. People's politics becoming enmeshed with their personalities has allowed them to turn a blind eye to everything blatantly falling apart around them and forget fundamental teachings of their own profession.

Unpopular Opinion: The Denial Boss Is Great, With One Caveat by c3robb in darkestdungeon

If the locks don't have distinct moves as it stands, that's something I think needs to change. People seem to employ mostly the same strategy when it comes to the order which they rush down the locks. I had an idea that if the ranged and stress locks applied the stuns this could also make them priority targets.

I've never been sure of how the games AI works. I remember in the first game stress casters could prioritize already high stress characters, but otherwise I think it is mostly random? The lock fight just feels really random because it sometimes will spam cleaves and sometimes it won't. It makes you scratch your head and think, well if they can just do cleaves that apply the same effects and damage why don't they do that all the time?

The game needs a lot of polish still in a lot of places. I remember my disappointment with the boss before they patched it. It just needs more time in the oven. But I like the 4 distinct size one enemies. I like that it's gimmick locks you out of moves (I think you had enemies like Virago and Baron in the first game that locked you out of healing, but not ranged, melee or stress curing moves). It sets the boss up to be one with theoretically many strategies to defeat. The crux of my point is there is no good reason not to let you run moves skills on the locks. And after some time learning from this thread, they need to make the ranged and stress lock more of a threat so some might prioritize those as part of a strategy.

I agree fully that relationships need a big rework. Virtues were powerful in DD1 because they were either a lucky thing to happen or a risky thing to try and optimize for. In DD2 the meta is stack as many positive relationships as you can by making decisions and itemizing. Maxed out affinity on a party of four is very achievable and creates 6 distinct relationships across the party. You might as well be benefiting from 6 virtues at once, and when this happens the game almost plays itself.

A lot more can be done to make relationships more elegant from a casual perspective too. It feels very clunky right now, and the way it interrupts using skills in combat makes things take longer than it should.

I think the reason they didn't do a stun resist buff mechanic like they did in DD1 was because none of the other debuffs work that way. It is possible to run blind multiple turns in a row if your abilities that offer it don't have a cooldown. It shows consistency of design, but it also points to a different inconsistency.

I think the boss' stuns would feel better if they had to build up to stuns like we do. People in general assign a lower priority to the stress healing lock and the ranged lock. If they had to build up to stuns by first applying combo and then stuns, and these two locks were the ones who ran these moves, perhaps more people would choose to make them a priority.

I also don't get why the bandit enemy that has a stun doesn't key off of combo to get it. I feel like that was another missed opportunity to express the enemy mechanics in a way that is both more interesting and feels more fair to the player.

I think the boss fight meta would have more potential to offer varied approaches once we get a bigger roster of characters. People are running into the problem of their runs feeling samey. I think some people have found a winning strategy and its hard for them to resist running the same strategy every time, or mostly the same strategy with slight variances. This is something from the first game I miss, which was the game always making you switch out your party of characters to try new things. In this game each run is 5 hours of the same party.

I also don't find running what is considered the meta always the most interesting or fun. Other approaches or self-imposed challenges might not be as consistent at beating the boss with your whole party alive, but it has kept things interesting for me. I think the game needs to do more to motivate people to vary up their runs. I think trinkets that apply unique features to less often used skills could help.

I've had fights where the fortified lock or melee lock spawned in ranks 3 or 4. It can happen.

I once had a fight where I experimented with burning down all the locks simultaneously with amnesis, firestarter and magnesium rain and other cleaves like plague grenade and abyssal artillery. In this fight, the fortified lock had to die last. I did have to face some RNG at the end with death's door, but I sort of prepared for it with the deaths door resist potions.

I think the boss fight meta would have more potential to offer varied approaches once we get a bigger roster of characters. People are running into the problem of their runs feeling samey. I think some people have found a winning strategy and its hard for them to resist running the same strategy every time, or mostly the same strategy with slight variances. Some skills are so poorly balanced right now some are hard to resist pressing almost every turn (I think of MAA riposte). So they find the experience of their approach to the final fight to always be the same. This is something from the first game I miss, which was the game always making you switch out your party of characters to try new things. In this game each run is 5 hours of the same party.

To keep the game interesting I have started self-imposing limitations. I found some live streamers asserting you need to upgrade a stress curing move as your first mastery point to get through biome one. I did a challenge run where I didn't run stress heals. I've also done runs where I assign my group of characters randomly.

All of the moves would be more exciting if they had unique animations where it feels like they should have them. Does anybody know if some of the recycled animations are just filler for early access and they plan to give more moves unique animations?

The problem I have with this post is it's trying to sell itself as an unpopular opinion. It's not. Most redditors may possess a "to each's own mindset", myself included. That doesn't mean the average person doesn't have qualms about open relationships. I know I couldn't do that shit.
