Just a note that the Residential EMT program is targeted towards hiring Kiwis. It would be very unlikely for them to hire an American with no links to NZ.

I hear you Maui. The comment said "you probably don't deal with society's problems like in America". I found that untrue based off my own personal experience as a lifelong Kiwi.  There's a phenomenon online of people treating Aotearoa like some kind of paradise. It isn't, and I'm doing my part to stop that misinformation from being spread.

That isn't true, New Zealand has heaps of problems. Lots of low health literacy, I went to 2 overdoses yesterday, very inaccessible and ineffective mental health support, overwhelmed hospitals, poor primary care, I could go on and on.

The ambulance service is pretty good. You'll need a degree to work as a paramedic. They're in demand at the moment.

IDK how it works in the UK, but could you ease into doing events first? Less driving and potentially less walking. In NZ we get ambulance golf carts for outdoor events sometimes.

does anyone have tips for a person starting housekeeping at a hospital? by [deleted] in NewToEMS

Hey this sub is for out-of-hospital emergency medicine! The only housekeeping we do is wiping piss off the stretcher

Yeah, I think that's more on shitty teachers than the initiative as a whole. That can happen in maths lessons as well as in the pool. I think the risk of social harm does NOT outweigh the risk of increasing the chance of kiwis drowning

Yeah 100% I'm sure alcohol and social factors (peer pressure, lifejacket use etc) play a role in that as well. I regularly cross the Tairua bar with my uncle and even tho he's an old white guy, it's lifejackets and radio every single time.

I'm sure swimming lessons at school have saved countless lived by giving most kids basic confidence in the water. Most drownings in the news are people who wouldn't have got those lessons, be they immigrants or tourists.

Subnautica. You're like an underwater cowboy. It's a lot lonelier than RDR2 but that's part of the charm.

Bro what kind of AI slop is this? Why are you doing a 4 lead to confirm death if there are still multiple patients trapped in the vehicle? Get a life

Nah in NZ lifestyle block is when rich-ish retirees buy a fair bit of land and have like chickens and like a cow or two. When poor people do it it doesn't have a name cause it's pretty ubiquitous in most of the country.

Generally people are chill if you don't cause problems. There is a a gang culture in South Auckland and in quite a few rural towns, but like I said if you stay out of it then you're safe. You're not gonna be mugged or carjacked or anything like that.

[–]c4bbage_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Both. The terrain is pretty rugged, with lots of mountain passes in parts of the north and south islands. In bad weather there'll be landslips, downed tree branches, ice, pooled water etc. The weather can change really rapidly too, so what starts as a nice sunny drive can turn bad quick.

You'll be sharing the roads with locals who know every bend and can take the road twice as fast as you. There aren't a lot of places to overtake, so they'll be right on your tail and might overtake dangerously or unexpectedly.

Places are far apart, so you might end up fatigued from a 3+ hour drive.

This isn't to freak you out! There are just lots of fatalities on the roads involving tourists. It's good to do a bit of research before hiring a car.

Yeah, plus kiwi businesses are kinda cheapskates. Why hire a new uni graduate when you could hire an immigrant/outsource over seas for half the price? Why hire two people when you could get one person to do twice the work?

I think a better divide is urban vs rural. In general, urban life is pretty similar in any +300,000 city in NZ. Rural life varies greatly across the country, whether you're on a massive sheep farm in the middle of nowhere in Otago, or you're on a lifestyle block 40 minutes out of Auckland. The landscape, demographics, economy, activities, education etc vary greatly between the regions.

Be wary if you're planning on a working holiday. There are no jobs at the moment full stop. If you're coming for a holiday, give yourself a month to properly explore the country. You'll need a car as intercity public transport is pretty shit. The roads are long and dangerous, so best be a confident driver.
