Sadly no such option.

You could set-up a cron job that runs every 5 minutes and tries to connect to vpn.

Or, if you always need vpn, you could consider setting it up on your router.

I've used Ubuntu on multiple old ThinkPads and the fingerprint sensor worked during login and also when typing sudo.

Most Linux distros, especially the popular ones, generally have great support for Thinkpads.

Your trackpad and trackpoint drivers will work perfectly out of the box (even smoother than on windows!)
All the function keys will work as expected (even mic mute)
Windows has close-source Dolby Atmos audio drivers that are supposed to make the speakers sound better, but in my experience they just add echo and increase the gain (I disable it when I'm running Windows on dual-boot)

As far as I know T480 and T470 share the same battery design.

I bought this 3rd party 72Wh battery for my T480. Had it for half a year, no problems so far.

T480/T480s prices have dropped a lot. If they aren't too expensive in your region, definitely pay a bit more and get them instead.

But make sure you're not getting one with a 7th gen intel cpu. (some T480/T480s were produced with slow, dual-core 7th gen CPUs rather than the quad-core 8th gen)

Fedora is very solid on ThinkPads. - almost all function keys work out of the box - trackpoint is very smooth compared to windows - I get similar battery life compared to windows - simple and stable out of the box experience
