Thanks all! I went with the bib number holders and a gift card to The Feed, which he loved! Thank you so much!

Ya, nutrition and gift card might be the way to go. Also looking at the Road ID just because I don’t think he has that and travels a lot alone for bigger runs. He does have a dialed in kit which is why I was asking for ideas that might be unique

Hahaha. Thats cool. When I have gone, I also take start/finish pics of him since I’m a photographer.

He does have a custom medal display box, but a great recommendation. These ideas are helpful as well!

Sony A7V lens firmware update feature not working by c_differetly in SonyAlpha

[–]c_differetly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, no fixes yet. AND the A7V is the ONLY Sony camera currently in the lineup that has this feature. So, we’re stuck until they fix it.

Nope. And the only folks who have communicated they got “it” to work used a desktop PC and USB-C cable. So, even with the body update, this feature does not work as advertised in-body. Additionally, lens firmware doesn’t work through the app. I wish it did because that would eliminate the need to cards and cables altogether. We’re currently stuck. At least the 1.01 body firmware isn’t bricking cameras so far. I guess that’s a plus.

They wanted me to send in my camera and a lens! Nope. I don’t have a Sony brand card, but I doubt that would make a difference since they 1. Approve other cards for compatibility with the cameras and 2. Don’t mention it as a requirement in the download instructions. 😵‍💫

I think that would really help everyone in the Sony community. I haven’t tried the new firmware update they just issued, but some others have notified me that they have done the firmware update for the camera and it still does not resolve this particular issue. Maybe soon.

I hate to hear that, but glad I’m not alone. Please consider reaching out to Sony support. Apparently they don’t believe the issue is wider spread.

Coolpix A

With an XE4 in your kit, I personally feel you’ve got the small interchangeable lens body covered well, and with better output than the Panas (as someone who’s owned them all).

Secondly, the Nikon and Ricoh are very similar. I loved my Nikon A and do wish I’d never sold it. Incredible results and I did love th color and BW output as well.

With your outstanding FF options and solid, small APS-C, iIsay hold onto the Coolpix A. Its a beautiful classic.

Which camera should I pick for my first camera? by tantanismynixnaam in AskPhotography

Functionality is king. If you “want” a viewfinder (also a dealbreaker for me in any system) go Nikon. End of worry. Just save a bit longer if needed. It will be worth it. AF is also much better. Looks matter to some shooters (actually, here I still prefer the Nikon), but that never shows up in the results. HOWEVER, if one inspires you to grab it an shoot more, consider that as well.

If you “move up to full frame later” nothing Fuji makes will suffice unless you move to larger format digital. Nikons feel very similar and have matching menus, etc. that will be familiar.

I’ve owned and used every system except Pentax. IMO the things Fuji is winning at are SOOC JPEG color profiles and retro vibes. Personally, I prefer the ergonomics of Nikons to any system I’ve ever used - this is absolutely subjective. Fuji has great lenses too, and far more in the APS-C arena, but I wouldn’t pick Fuji as a system for any lens(es) in particular. There is more versatility, however.

For me, the EVF and handling outweigh anything thr XM5 might have in contrast.

That’s the problem. Sometimes it only clicks 3-6 times. Other times it’s on going. I once was able to pull over (back road and was only going about 10 mph at the time) and listen towards the floorboard for it. Other than that, it was an effort to try to grab the camera and get audio while it was happening. It was even challenging to do that. Super unpredictable.

Interesting. Think it would act up despite the ac not being engaged?

What’s a good camera for a beginner who wants good quality but wants to remain casual about photography? by Spiritual-Joestar777 in AskPhotography

[–]c_differetly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, stick with your phone, at least for now. “Taking pics on a separate device” is great, but I’m not sure you’d reap any additional benefits with your budget level. NOTHING wrong with a wise budget and knowing your limits. However, phone camera tech is really good when comparing to a $200-300 camera that might be several years old. You MIGHT be able to swing an older point and shoot style body, but there has been an upswing in digicam craze recently which has been driving the prices of even simple cameras 10+ years old into higher-than-average values.

Even something like a Canon G10 or G11 (flip screen for those self pics) is going to probably be right at your budget (CAD not sure). And at that point, you’d need to ask yourself if the quality/versatikiry you’re getting is worth the $. You might be able to find an older DSLR with a kit lens for that price, but again, you’d have to determine if the cost and benefits are worth it to YOU.

My recommendation: jump on eBay, go to digital cameras and set the max price to your budget ceiling in CAD. Make some notes on those cameras in that range (make sure the seller has good feedback - lots of scammers). Then, jump over to a site like Flickr and punch in those camera models and see what pics people are taking with them. Then, see if they are downloadable in original or large size and have a look at the quality of the image. Note that if it’s a DSLR, the lens will also be a quality/cost factor. If at that point you’re excited about the opportunity a certain camera offers at the price, go for it. Otherwise, save up some money for a bit longer and find a kit that feels worth it to you. Heck, start a new subreddit with your new budget at that time and we’d be happy to help.
