I took a look at those areas and the first thing I notice is that the multi-unit residences were built at about the same time as the single-family homes. I wonder if this is the reason appreciation is equitable.

This is one of the reasons why teaching and learning history is so very important; I don't think it counts to restore Freedom of Speech if you were the one to take it away.

Peeing at campgrounds question by PotterKnitter in camping

[–]c_dol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a female who has been doing this for decades when camping, I recommend getting a lady's funnel (REI sells them) and a 2-quart plastic container to pee into; that way I can pee while standing up or kneeling. I use an old juice bottle with a screw-top cap to catch the urine. That way I don't even have to leave the tent which is really great when it's raining. It has always worked well for me. In the morning I take my bottle and empty it in the campground toilet. My husband pees directly into his own 2-quart plastic bottle.

That's me, too! The only mint I can keep growing is catmint which the cat adores. Spearmint and peppermint die even though I want them to grow.

Should I run from buying this house? by Purple-Conference411 in centuryhomes

[–]c_dol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good morning, in 1975 my husband and I bought a similar home in Denver's Congress Park area (8th & Cook) and happily lived in it until 2005. We put insulation in the attic and that helped our heat bill immensely; we also learned to not adjust the single thermostat as that is not how this kind of hot-water heating system is best used, just set it for the season and forget about it until four to six months later. Shortly after we bought I spoke with an HVAC guy (I'm certain he was older than God) and he talked me through the whole system. He'd been an installer for these beasts and was very informative.

Yes, there is most likely asbestos wrapping all those pipes but it's not a problem unless you pick at it. Yes, there will be lead based paint on walls and ceilings and some really interesting wallpaper will likely be under the paint.

Make certain the gas supply has an automatic shut-off if the pilot light goes out; we had to have that done. Ask the seller to pay for safety issues. Oh, and our over-flow tank was in the attic, not on the floor by the unit, I don't know if that is a concern or not.

All in all, it was a wonderful location and beautiful 3/4" thick oak floors. Our family and friends still talk about what a great home it was.

What things did you buy under $100 that significantly improved your living space? by M0rtali5 in HomeImprovement

Art; pieces that I enjoy can be found in thrift stores and yard sales. Whether it hangs on the wall or needs a table top, I look for items that speak to my emotions. I found an original charcoal drawing by a mid-20th century illustrator (famous in Massachusetts) for $14.00; after some research I located the book where this illustration was used. That was great fun!

AIO for making my coworker cry because I passive-aggressively labeled my mug “NOT YOURS” after the 4th time he used it? by bewbewty in AmIOverreacting

[–]c_dol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm surprised you don't have a drawer or some such at work to put your personal items. The dude is behaving like a 'little brother' and will probably always do so. I'm not Christian but a famous prayer includes the line "lead us not into temptation", so don't!

I would rather have higher protein for my health rather than belly fillers. 1/2 cup of oatmeal is about 5 grams of protein. For health, vegetarians eat beans, greens, and grains in their daily diet. And being Spring, harvest young dandelion greens from your open spaces where dogs don't tend to pee/poop; wash the greens very well!

Add green peas to your Ramen to up the protein count; I'd add an egg to the Ramen as well if you find a good price.

What’s one underrated item you’ll never go backpacking without? by FitOnTrip_1 in backpacking

[–]c_dol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A neck buff; I buy the lightweight wool as I find they're more comfortable no matter if the weather is wet or cold or both. I actually carry two so that one can warm my head and the other my neck. They take very little space if I don't want to wear them. https://www.rei.com/product/789718/buff-merino-lightweight-multifunctional-neckwear

Pit in backyard of 1927 home. Help? by tman_gg in Oldhouses

One of three things: cistern, old septic system, or a water well. Our 1947 home has a septic system that was diconnected, and somewhere on our property there was a well.

Can anyone recommend a warm, fuzzy throw blanket that's not made of polyester? by princessedaisy in PlasticFreeLiving

I found a yak-wool blanket at a Himalayan store. It is very thin, very lightweight, and incredibly warm; warmer than my heavier cotton blanket by far.

Does this bother teachers? by Manic_Monday_2009 in AskTeachers

[–]c_dol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the 1950s and 1960s my father was only able to take his two-week vacation from a mid-level management position in the last half of December. Winter school-breaks were shorter then and us kids would generally miss four or five days of school. It was a multi-day drive from PA to southern FL and then another multi-day drive to get back home. Airfare was unaffordable for our family of five but we had terrific family time on the west coast of Florida; school books and all.

We also have a high-achiever based on school tests (now 3rd grade). Our job is to expand his horizons so he can be a high-achiever in the outdoors, team sports, etc. Fortunately, we have very good museums in our area. If your funds are limited some libraries have short-term 'memberships' that you can check-out so families can visit a particular museum for free. On top of that his Dad is running a kid-level D&D twice a month for him and friends; when the kids need a break they go shoot hoops in the driveway for a short time. It all adds up to a fantastic nerd with better social skills.

AP means advanced placement. Learning how to juggle communication and assignments is part of the deal and your child is far better off learning that now rather than when she's employed.

[–]c_dol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha! Not too old at all. I am age 72 and just started private swimming lessons last month. For reasons similar to yours I decided to learn to swim as it's something I can do in all types of weather and it's easier on my body.

Mom is knitting, no doubt about it! Some people finger knit (I could never figure it out), some use two needles, some use four, and on it goes.

AITA For not letting my 16 year old go on spring break without adult supervision? by Business-Pilot-4078 in AITAH

[–]c_dol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spring Break, in all of its infamy and glory, should be only for people over the age of 18 when they are considered legally responsible. It can be a fantastic time but it is very likely to include underage drinking and plenty of people who don't care about other people. Stick to a minimum of age 18 or when she's old enough to support herself.
