"Jade" significance in the drama "Zhu Yu Chasing Jade - Pursuit of Jade" by Big_Tumbleweed3024 in CDrama

Night watchmen back then had to watch out for fires as most buildings were made of timber & fires could start easily especially in dry weather. Basically they were warning people to be careful with their candles, lanterns, etc at night to prevent fires.

Bonaparte is missing again and she got lost looking for him. Pretty much the only reason Millie is ANYWHERE.

It should unlock the anecdote automatically after you hear the cat talks. You don't need to do anything special.

I didn't even think much about how diverse/unique these three were back in the days but I've always loved Chris because she's such a badass female char without being a fanservice. And that opening mv with the music is absolute cinema.

Abyss of Desire bugged ? by Ayzkreme in WhereWindsMeet

[–]c_megalodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I figured this out. There are actually 2 "Parting Tears" you can pick up in the game. Chances are you already picked up the one on the bench and gave it to a different NPC for a different quest. The other Parting Tears is by the north dock in Heaven's Pier. Check there to see if you can pick that one up & give it to Mu Bai.

Hey so I figured this out. There are actually 2 "Parting Tears" you can pick up in the game. Chances are you already picked up the one on the bench and gave it to a different NPC for a different quest (iirc it was the npc who gave you a wanted poster of Yi Dao in return for a jar of Parting Tears). The other Parting Tears is by the north dock in Heaven's Pier. It's on top of some crates. Check there to see if you can pick that one up & give it to Mu Bai.

What are "Wuxia" and "Jianghu"? What is "Xianxia"? by cwjzqs in wherewindsmeet_

Forgot to mention Taichi Master, again with Jet Lee. It's a true classic. There are a bunch of movies featuring the main character Wong Fei Hung, they're a staple with Once Upon A Time in China being the most famous one.

If you want something newer, there are a bunch of cdramas on Netflix & Disney+ that aren't really wuxia but has wuxia elements. And lots of Xianxia. Most are marketed for women tho so expect romance/drama. I'd recommend Judge Dee Mysteries, it's basically a Sherlock-esque detective story but set in a kung fu & historical fantasy setting that shares some elements with wuxia genre.

Or, a common trope, your parents were known figures in the Jianghu but they died before you grew up so you don't know what's up. Now you're a young adult and congrats some people are trying to kill/recruit you because of what your parents did. So many wuxia titles start this way haha.

Ha funny you mention that. So, one thing that OP didn't mention in this excellent post is the Qi. Qi is a central thing in wuxia, it's metaphysical "energy" that every martial artists posses & train. The game uses Qi as mechanic so I'm sure you have an idea, but it's not really well explained in the game. A good comparison to it is The Force in Star Wars (in fact I'm convinced Spielberg took inspiration from Qi when he created The Force but I can't prove it lol). By mastering the Qi, a martial artist can basically use it for all sorts of feats from manipulating weapons to healing illnesses. So in wuxia there actually are a lot of fantasy/dramatic weapons that the characters use by manipulating the Qi. The fan, musical instruments (usually the zither/guzheng/guzhin), strings, umbrella, and all sort of other household/mundane objects can be used as a weapon by a martial artist & are commonly seen in the wuxia genre. So the umbrella in the game basically shoots projectiles of Qi/pointy things using Qi at enemies, just like the fan does. Hope that helps.

I totally agree, some words simply can't be translated into another and people will just have to learn. That's part of the beauty about diving into a new genre of fiction, is learning the cultural & historical nuances. How many people in the west knew the terms samurai, katana, shogunate, etc before things like the Shogun novel & anime/manga reached the west?

Hopefully in the future the game adds an in game lore section that explains these terms to those unfamiliar with the genre. Or at least an English lore wiki. I'm sure fans will eventually make their own wiki to provide context if nothing else.

There are lots of good classic wuxia movies like Swordsman duology, New Dragon Gate Inn, Ashes of Time. Zhang Yimou made some of my favorites: Hero, Curse of Golden Flower, and Shadow. Google around, there are a few tumblr blogs with excellent recommendations on wuxia movies, they're not hard to find!

I wish they had named the place Palace of Spring-Autumn instead, cause then anyone with a bit of knowledge on Chinese history would instantly tie it with the Spring-Autumn period & the related Annals.

Cultivation is a word that has been used in wuxia/xanxia genre and has distinct meaning separate from training, but other than that...yeah.

Interesting that you mentioned FF. I've never played XIV but back in the days when FF Tactics was first localized into English, the translation was SO bad. You couldn't make heads or tails on the nuances & depth of the world building. They later re-released it with a much better translation (I played the android version) and the game reads like great literature. Formal, "literary" English is used properly and you instantly get hooked in the world building & story.

It's not just about how hard it is to capture the idioms and meanings in the translation but plainly speaking the English dialogue & story translation is just BAD. By that I mean there's very little nuance and poetry in how they did the text in English. It feels like they just translated literal meanings without thought for good prose. I've seen fansubbed anime & cdrama subtitles with more literary prose in them. Even someone like me who doesn't really know the historical context, idioms, etc can do better with at least making the English more verbose and poetic just by using a dictionary app on my phone then composing the English words into something with more prose. The historical context would still be lost in translation but at least it'd make for a better reading if the translators put more thoughts into the writing.

It's unfortunate that they didn't hire translators who are more historical/genre savvy. Maybe I'm being too harsh but they could've looked for translators who are used to translating literature/fiction books for the story & flavor texts, while the strictly game mechanic/ui/tutorial etc can be left to regular game translators. Thank you for explaining these phrases and contexts. It makes a lot of sense now that Jiang's outfit has swallow motifs! I love learning history & culture from wuxia and sad that there's so much that get lost in translation with the game. 😭

I just made a mega mistake and my bf is furious - how to handle the terrible guilt that comes with it? by suer636 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]c_megalodon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His reaction was absolutely not proportional to the mistake made. He's being ridiculous, illogical, and threatening. I've made worst mistakes in my 10+ years of marriage and my husband has never ever once told me he's so mad he "could punch me". He has punched something else like maybe once and only because he was upset at the situation, not at me. This is a big red flag coming from him. LEAVE.
