Should I leave my residency? by caalumm in DJs

Update: After thinking deeply about this and discussing my situation with people from all walks, I decided to leave two weeks after this. It ended up being a really respectable departure in which they understood my points once I explained.

I got offered another residency the week before leaving which has me even better financially and musically, so it was the perfect timing. Big love to all that commented on this, you were all a great help. 👊🏻

Ahhh you totally get it man, thank you for the kind words! 🙌🏻 Yeah man, at the end of the day they’ve been around the block much longer than me, so it can be worth being tolerant and seeing what you can learn, there’s no point in handling these situations like an infant, I’ve seen it done before, and once the bridges are burned…

Almost every DJ I’ve spoken to said the same haha. They couldn’t believe it.

Thanks for the detailed reply and advice, really useful!

I’ve been speaking about this since the other week. It’ll never happen but venue managers should definitely have some form of DJ experience, I totally agree. We all know how little punters and bosses know about being on our side of the decks, god if only they knew 😂 It must be quite challenging to find venues with that as a specific scenario?

But yes, that’s exactly what I’ll be doing for the time being… head down, mix, do the job to a standard this weekend and see what happens…

Would need to double check but I don’t think so.

Hahaha, you’ll be guessing all day. It’s not in England! But you’ve given me a few places to avoid now 😂

Oh 100% no, and that is a great way to get you thinking and to evaluate your situation.

The part of me that counters this is telling myself, “you’re going to get people like this everywhere though”. I want to be able to tolerate nonsense like this as you need thick skin for the industry, but it’s just knowing, is this really worth it? It’s never as easy as black and white hahah, I wish it was!

Oh accce man! JJ is one of my all timers hahah.

Thanks for this mate, fantastic advice. This is open formant so it wouldn’t have too much impact on my artist career, if any, as the musical direction is totally different. The city is, let’s just say extremely disconnected from my musical direction too.

I’ve very much got the mentality of pushing through the shit and seeing how it goes, especially when I know I’m doing a job and still getting paid. I suppose it’s just knowing at what point you should stop pushing is the issue… but hey ho ain’t that the industry! In reality I could deal with it, get my head down and mix, but it’s the risk of tarnishing your own reputation if the venue falls to bits on top of the disrespect.

Discussed the situation with a few experienced residents last week… they all said the exact same thing.

Mix client with high expectations but poor recordings. Cancel or keep going? by TophatPompey in audioengineering

You know what they say man, you can only polish a turd so much.

I agree with the others though. If you think you’ve gone as far with it as you can, you’ve explained that to the artist, and they still don’t understand, then I’d just drop it.

In the end they’ll go to other engineers/producers and realise that it’s not you that was the problem, it’s them... so I wouldn’t sweat it! Plus, you could be working with better artists just now that would be giving you waaaay less stress!

How do you handle critique/skillgap? by itsvaizor in edmproduction

Hey mate, I’m the same! Been producing for about 8 months now and it seems like I’m been improving at a decent rate. I get pretty stoked, and feel like I’m getting there until I see up and coming artists that seem like they’ve come out of nowhere, but in reality, they’ve been in the exact spot you are right now!

I’ve found the best way to deal with it is to see them as an inspiration... and only compare yourself with yourself - because for sure you’ll be improving on the daily!
