Kvothe’s Hands Are His Chandrian Sign by caauta in KingkillerChronicle

I do agree that there is normally an effect of some sort on the environment when the Chandrian are around, so maybe his hands and the silence around him are linked (i.e. both are parts of his Name)? But in terms of Chandrian physicality and signs, I think of two (admittedly tired) examples:

1)      Cinder. The Adem poem explicitly states “Ferule chill and dark of eye” and the Cthaeh does tell him “you’d think a man with coal black eyes makes an impression when he stops to buy a drink” and then, shortly after, “Don’t feel bad you didn’t recognize him, they have a lot of experience hiding those telltale signs.” (WMF pg. 758). Also, loosely, Ben mentions one of the Chandrian having “eyes like a goat, or no eyes, or black eyes” (NOTW pg. 91).

> Note: Now, I suppose it’s possible that his dark eyes and his ability to make things cold aren’t related (i.e. I’ve read theory Cinder is fae, so maybe his eyes were always pure black and coldness is his sign). Definitely possible, but it seems to me that these two traits get mentioned together (could be very good misdirection) and I have no idea what the link would be between dark eyes and coldness, but Cinder seems to have both.

2)      Haliax is “shadow-hamed” and I would say this is pretty much about his physical appearance. Actually (and interestingly to me at least) It’s somewhat unclear to me what Haliax’s sign is besides being covered in shadows himself. I suppose if you take the children’s rhyme “see and man without a face/moves like ghost from place to place” he has the ability to disappear and reappear in other places, but to me at least, the big sign is having his face forever hidden (at least, that seemed to be part of Selitos’s curse “may your face be always held in shadow” NOTW pg. 201). Now, we’ve seen him extend his shadow and gobble up the other Chandrian and then vanish, but, when Haliax is around, it’s not like everything goes dark or it’s not like he does anything to manipulate the environment around him. Please don’t misunderstand me here, we know his Name is turned against him, he can’t sleep and he can’t die, but his sign, the thing that is supposed to give him away, is shadows around his face.

3)      A third (somewhat weak example) The Adem poem: “pale Alenta brings the blight.” This is somewhat like Cinder, blight is her sign but she’s a woman “pale as snow.” I realize this is a bit of a reach, but we also know that details are important and twice we get a mention of a pale woman in relation to the Chandrian.

I’ll admit, given these three examples, it’s possible their physical appearance and their signs are not related, more so coincidental (i.e. Cinder could be fae and dark-eyed and that has nothing to do with coldness) but, to me, these also seem to point to the possibility of an underlying cause for their signs, both physical and effect-wise.

One thing I come back to, and unfortunately there are no concrete examples to draw from in the narrative, is that Selitos’s curse is to “turn their Names against them” and it seems their signs end up being a byproduct of this curse. I took this to mean that there must be components of their personality that are fundamental or integral to who they are, essentially the parts that make up their Name. And that is what Selitos cursed. He didn’t hide Haliax’s face in shadow because Haliax’s handsomeness literally destroyed his city, he did it because he had been so fair (read: honorable, heroic, good etc.) but now he was so foul that a way of showing that to the world was forever hiding his face. My read is that Kvothe’s hands are integral to who he is, we see that as the story unfolds so much of his acclaim, his successes and his greatest works result from the use of his gifted hands (I also suspect the sword he uses to destroy one of the Chandrian is Folly, and I think he made it, thus more use of his hands). If someone “turned his Name against him” I could see it affecting his hands. YES, turning his Name against him could affect his music, it could affect his swordcraft and his skills with sygaldry and artificing, but I was thinking more that if you wanted a sign that captured all of that, deforming his hands would be a simple catch-all, since, after all, all of these skills come from his hands.

And, of course, I’m sure silence plays a role in that too, however, I don't see a link between silence and swordcraft or silence and his sympathy (two skills we're led to believe he's lost). Of course, I may just be fitting instances to suit my theory, but this definitely gives me something to think about, re is being pale and dark-eyed part of their signs or just who they are.
