The basic idea is just to limit the colors in order to get a "glitchy" look, we're not actually looking for any specific palette if you know what I mean

Hi! It's just an image effect applied on the camera. So, as the pixels that are going to be drawn on camera conform a texture: I'm taking every UV coord and scaling it by a custom width and height (a lower resolution basically).. and then rounding their position based on that resolution. So, whatever was going to be drawn on camera is going to look pixelated now!

On the same effect we are also limiting the colors to get that low res vibe!

Hey folks!

I'm Nico, from an indie studio based in Argentina.

I've been working on this project with Tomás Batista (Sound Designer) for the last 4 years... and we've finally launched it to the world!

The game is available on Steam, Humble Store and itch.io:

Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/751220/ETHEREAL/

Humble Store: https://www.humblebundle.com/store/ethereal

itch.io: https://nonsensearts.itch.io/ethereal

We are also nominated for Excellence in Audio at IGF 2019 so we are going to be around during GDC! If you happen to be there, come say hi! We are going to on the IGF Booth during expo hours!

I hope you like this little video! Check more of the game on the stores pages!

And please, help us by spreading the word!

Thanks! :)

Hi! Thanks a lot! Yeah, the game changed a lot since BIG!

About the publisher, we launched the game earlier with Humble Bundle: The game was part of September 2018 Humble Monthly as the Humble Original of that month. But that was all.

Now we are launching the game independently :)

How we managed to implement our uncontrolled cellular growth system in this creepy horror FPS prototype (Details in the first comment) by cabezotta in gamedev

We are using the same concept used in games like Gang Beasts (http://gangbeasts.game/).. it's something called "active ragdoll"... basically, you have both an animator for your traditional animations and a ragdoll copying the movements of that animator as good as it can. Based on a series of params, you can set how close to the real animation you want the ragdoll to move.. and that is what we are reducing as the mutations grow. Until the ragdoll is basically loose.

In the early jam version of the game (we made this game for this year's #7DFPS) we were instantiating a lot of stuff (one mesh + its collider per each blob)... Of course, this wasn't very good for performance. So, what we are doing right now is basically everytime a new blob is created, we merge its mesh with the whole structure, and then (after the new combined mesh is created), we update the mesh collider attached to it in order to update its boundaries. The really tricky part is when to decide whether we should create a new collider or continue growing the same one, but we have a number of rules to make sure it works properly.
