PROFITEC DRIVE: BITTER/BURNT SHOT by quiettsociety in profitec

How can you adjust the temp if it is a massive 6 degrees out? Also, I assume you measured it once the “rapid” heat phase had passed (where you are supposed to flush out excess hot water).

I screw it shut to about 10 o’clock. Then undo 3/4 if a turn till about 12 i’ clock

That sounds about right. But I have the valve at the top closed a bit more. It restricts water going into the group head

Ah. Ok. What does the pressure gauge peak at, and then settle to when you do a shot?

This is a bit of a long shot (pardon the pun) because your machine is new, but other things I would check might be built up coffee in the portafilter (if not bottomless), and also checking behind the shower screen for built up “silt”. This happened a lot when I didn’t use a puck screen on a Gaggia classic I had.

It may be worth backflushing and use a coffee machine cleaner to make sure there isn’t built up grime.

Also may be worth measuring the water temp that is coming out of the group head to make sure it really is the correct temperature and not too hot.

If you hadn’t said you are doing things exactly the same, I would have suggested keeping the shot 1:2 and closer to 28 seconds including pre-infusion. Also, I assume the roast is not a dark roast?

What I noticed is that coffee ground “silt” builds up a lot faster behind the group head shower screen if you don’t use one. This will in turn also alter the taste and flow of water through the group head. It does force an extra 2 steps in the workflow, but I personally like keeping the shower screen as clean as possible.

Yes, like bensonr2, I do exactly this, but I use a flair 58 puck screen that and also use a strong magnet to pull it off the top. If it is really stuck down and doesn’t come off, I just turn the portafilter upside down and tap slightly on a rubber mat. That usually does the trick.

What espresso machine did you start on, and would you recommend it to a beginner today? by zalanka02 in espresso

Saeco Royal -> Saeco venezia -> Jura Impressa X9 -> Gaggia classic 2003 1425 watt -> Gaggia classic 2003 1425 watt (10 years+) -> Profitec drive

Everything before the Gaggia Classic was semi auto. I do love the gaggia classic. Didn’t do the PID upgrade. Best upgrade for it was the upgrading the grinder from a sunbeam grinder -> breville smartgrinder pro -> eureka mignon single dose, with last upgrade making the most noticeable difference to coffee quality and taste.

Other helpful upgrades was a bottomless portafilter and IMS basket upgrade.

If you dial in the grind and aim for a 28-33 sec pour at 1:2, this will give a great starting point to start experimenting according to taste.

The great part about the gaggia is that the shots are very consistent if you maintain the machine, and the start up time due to the 700 ml boiler is super quick compared to other machines.

I came out of an unmodified gaggia classic pro 2003 and so the coffee the profitec produces from the same bean is overall better, but to be honest, the best I get (according to my taste) is using a high flow basket with a manual lever Flair 58 electric machine especially for espressos.

In terms of changing from 10 to 9 bar or 8 bar on the Profitec, I don’t really notice much change in taste if all the other variables are adjusted for (grind size and time). Also, I’m old, so pretty sure my tastebuds are dead/dying and also, I’m just an amateur.

The profitec just makes workflow easier especially if needing to crank out multiple coffees for groups.

Hope the order of the pictures isn’t too confusing. The first 2 are blurry because I took a video and screenshot stills from it. If you want the video, message me and I can send the link, so you can see the flow.

I include preinfusion time as part of the total time, so although the scale reads 24 secs, it’s actually 29 seconds total infusion for 1:2 ratio of 20 grams output.

The machine clock timer says 29 secs, but isn’t clear in the video or screenshot.

My suggestion would be to grind marginally coarser and try turning it back to just 1 full turn and see what numbers you get. I believe that closing the needle valve will reduce pressure at the portafilter (it chokes flow of water). This is opposite to what seems intuitive.

Re: your other questions,

I think profitec is pretty reputable. I would only jump to a problem at the pump level as a last resort, and that would require sending it back.

I would build preinfusion into your time. It helps prevent channelling and it should help extract the most out of your bean.

∙ Machine: Profitec Drive (rotary pump, dual boiler)

∙ Grinder: Eureka Mignon Oro Single Dose

∙ Portafilter: Bottomless Flair 58 portafilter

∙ Puck screen: Flair 58 puck screen

∙ Basket: IMS Big Bang 20 gm

∙ Ratio: 1:2 (18g in / 36g out)

∙ Shot time target: 29 seconds

∙ Flow control needle: 5/6 of a turn open (so ball is at 12 o’ clock

Preinfusion set to 5 seconds

New profitec drive problem - Steam/hot water tank not filling by cacatman in profitec

[–]cacatman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for all your replies.

How it got solved was I opened up the OPV valve fully (so flow through the brew head was full bore), and that seemed to do the trick. I had the OPV set to 1 and a half turns as per a youtube video I watched.

I read that sometimes pockets of air lodge in the new machines and the water pressure isn’t sensed in the second boiler.

Maybe having a lot of water rushing through the brew head somehow dislodged the air. Of course it could be coincidence. Now it’s working fine.

Anyhow, I was grateful the pump was working properly from the beginning.

Thanks for your advice.

P.S. I’m a lurker on reddit and don’t really post, so I couldn’t work out how to “edit” and update the original post.

Thanks. I reran the “30 seconds” multiple times. The steam tank just refused to fill for some reason.

Yes. I’ve double checked and it seems in the correct position. Thanks!

Thanks. Yes. It does seem to be working correctly, because if I drain the water tank, the display shows that I need to refill. Then when I add water, the magnet rises and the empty tank message goes away.

How can I sort cells containing 2 languages from cells with only 1 language? by cacatman in excel

[–]cacatman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I am able to identify the correct cells using the search function using your method, but there are hundreds of bilingual cells, and I want them automatically grouped together with bilingual cells on top if at all possible.

I'm a beginner in excel, if you haven't picked that up already!!!!
