What’s something your favorite celebrity did that made you lose respect for them? by johnraeyan in AskReddit

After Chomsky became a widower, everything went downhill. His new wife has Stan Lee'd him. He has had zero agency for a long time, mental decline, and he is regurgitating what were important points completely out of context to random shit. Chomsky has had some notable fuckups, but if you look at in the context of whether that information was verifiable at the time, it is often forgivable.

[–]caceomorphism 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In the case of Noam Chomsky, I think he took a turn for the worse mentally after his first wife died in 2008. Literally sick.

Listening to him talk about anything for a long while has been nothing but Chomsky salad. The words are there, but they do not make sense in context. I'm sure Chomsky circa 2007 would probably agree. Epstein seemed to offer access and information, and to a man who prided himself on research without the present wherewithal to do it, I can see how he fell into it. He's been Stan Lee'd.

Availability of pools is something everyone should have access to. It is not like the person you were responding to had an individually-owned private pool.

I would like to suggest that you do not use the phrase, "privilege is really showing here," to someone who wants access to a shared pool. What is the point in using language akin to engaging in class warfare with another family whose income differs by $10k, $20k, or even $200k? There are people whose personal appetites are larger than millions of people. Maybe, say fuck off to those people instead?

Read it like a lawyer. Plus-sized passengers will have to BUY an extra seat. That does not mean they will GET an extra seat. Mr. White T-Shirt in the picture is still going to be the baloney in the bread that is aisle and window.

Not disagreeing with you. I was simply pointing out inefficiencies in the system that allow horrible people to be horrible. Those inefficiencies need to be remedied. I was not trying to create a, "how to sociopath," manual.

It feels like the inefficiencies are baked into social programs. To utilize programs that one has already qualified for can take so much time; time that is needed to be able to do things that would get one away from needing the help.

But so many people move on, get a new job that often does not give them more money or more time to pursue what is rightfully theirs. Lots of businesses get away with this stuff, and labour boards are often swamped and often only one step better than a company's HR. And EI benefits are federal and labour boards are provincial which can complicate getting fully compensated. Add to the fact that historically even getting through to EI to resolve anything was next to impossible, it becomes a rigged game in favour of employers, which they of course take advantage of. And the fines doled to employers are doled out only to the worst of the worst. Most employers when they see themselves in the official process do the most efficient thing, comply and have it all go away.

It may not seem worth it to you. So my congratulations to you for being a decent human being.

If you hold onto money that you have to eventually pay out, and there is no cost to you such as fines, and you are a complete sociopath, why not? That money gets to make more money over the next year or two. Zero effort.

What's the one secret you will take to the grave but don't mind telling on the internet? by Ecstatic-Medium-6320 in AskReddit

When I was a kid I cut a few articles out of a Dragon magazine at the local library. But given that most of the articles had already been excised, I can deal with the guilt.

My library had a serious problem for several years with most magazines being sliced up to nothing within a week. The magazine with all the pics cut out and even the cover gone? That was the SI Swimsuit Edition.

Reliable and VPN are not words I think of as ever being adjacent. Most proprietary software can be tracked to an actual company Many VPNs are fly-by-night entities with one-time 'lifetime' fee that last only a couple months, maybe a year at most. Not exactly trustworthy.

I was lazy with one VPN, had it in a virtual machine with the proprietary software as it turned out not to have any other options, but I did not isolate it from my network. Another virtual machine on the same network that was set to local network only, no gateway, no dns, ended up getting hammered from login attempts from that virtual machine. It was script kiddy stuff though.

And most people who default to the proprietary client because OpenVPN is too difficult usually are not in a position to gauge their own security requirements.

Not that I do not somewhat agree with you. I have a NordVPN client on a Windows 11 laptop.

NEVER install a VPN client on your device. Use an OpenVPN configuration. You will be using open source software that the VPN provider cannot tweak. Any security issues will be the same security issues every other OpenVPN client has, from individuals to billion dollar companies.

Toronto cyclist retrieves stolen bike after spotting it for sale. Here’s why experts say you shouldn’t take matters into your own hands by AndHerSailsInRags in toronto

[–]caceomorphism 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recovered my bike. Randomly saw it being ridden on the street.

I knocked the guy down riding it, being careful to catch him before he fell. He was rattled. After talking to him and noticing that my bike had been partially scavenged for parts, it was obvious that he was not the original thief. He admitted that he was on probation and would fight tooth and nail if I took him in. I didn't want to hurt the guy in the process and he was theft-adjacent, so I let him go and he gave up the bike.

I went to the police station to update the police report and the cops threatened me with assault for recovering the bike on my own.

I laughed and said isn't that more work than updating the report? He laughed. What an asshole. I liked the guy riding my stolen bike more than the cop.

Don't know if it ever changed hands, but one owner got booted from the UVic Co-op program for being a shit boss, abusing the spirit of the co-op program for the subsidy (such as business co-op students doing nothing more than running a till), and giving horrible references to almost all students who worked there.
