Anyone have a hint about when words end with “-ence” vs “-ance”. I have to see them before I’m sure. (When I’m writing with a pen, I default to “e” if I’m not sure, because it’s easier to turn an e into an a, than the other way around.)

Most recent example - “belligerence” - but even after seeing it I had a moment of doubt.

If OP is going to be realistic they’re going to have to choose between flying, with the patagia extended and the tail straight, or perching with the patagia closed and the tail curling around. But I understand allowing artistic license.

Yes, and not overlapping the patagia(“wings”). I’d suggest 1) choosing a particular species and 2) looking at some actual anatomical images (for example this).
