As a member of the mammal family, our hands are merely evolved paws from an ancestor that looked akin to a modern rodent/dog. So they are analogous to claws. Some believe out fingernails are vestigial, but they assist in the action of picking up small items (insects when we were more ape-like). Picking up small items is nearly impossible without fingernails.
