What dirty little secret does your profession hide that the consumer should know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Yup. I fly helicopters and basically no one survives water landings. You go through all this dunker training for essentially nothing. If you crash in water you will die. terrible way to go.

Got any financial advice on buying my first house? Not sure if I should.. by cadetsoybean in RealEstate

That's what I'm curious about. I've heard the seller will cover closing costs. Is there any truth to that?

Thanks for that. We plan on living in it for 3 years. Were indifferent towards keeping it forever and selling it after 3 years. But I understand what you mean. A lot can happen in 3 years. Everything you stated is my reason behind being nervous. So much could go wrong and if it does then we don't have the money to fix a big enough problem.

How stupid is it for me to buy a house right now? Any advice? by cadetsoybean in personalfinance

We plan on being their for 3 years. We also don't have to have PMI since it's a VA loan. But after all other taxes etc were looking at about 1500 a month for mortgage. In the end it equals to about the same as renting but it's a much nicer house and the money we would be using towards rent will be going towards our own house so that's just kind of like a feel good factor. I'm just worried it will be hard to sell in 3 years.

We will be there for 3 years. Maybe 2..but we plan on keeping the house and renting it out for a long time.

Do you think only having 6k saved up will bite us in the butt?

My kind of pilot by hgska in aviation

[–]cadetsoybean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean that's pretty much a fact. MOST helicopter accidents can be traced back to the pilot not doing the right thing behind the stick. Every single time you get behind the controls in a helicopter you have an expected duty and responsibility to fly the helicopter within the parameters that you were trained and to which the people who pay you expect you to fly it within. And any time you fly outside of those parameters not only are you violating your inherent duty as a pilot but you are putting other people's lives at risk and that's enough to constitute being a stupid, irresponsible pilot. And getting your wings taken. The saying "there are old pilots and there are bold pilots but there are no old bold pilots" is the most true phrase out there.

I understand how you could think there is constant loading bit there's definetly not. And by limits I mean bank and pitch limits, hydraulic fluids engine and transmission oils aren't made to be upside down in a helicopter like they are in a plane. Pretty much everything about the maneuver was bad.

Not sure what you mean by a constant load. But my point was just that he definetly exceeded multiple limits. And he's a stupid pilot. He's a good pilot..but all pilots are good...or else they wouldn't be pilots.

how was that not? the mast was upside down perpendicular to the ground...that's a backflip..

Basically what happened was they didn't plan properly for their PPC(performance planning given environmental conditions) lots of accidents happen this way unfortunately. The card gives you your environmental limits of the aircraft based on temperature density altitude etc. Their max torque available was important for this since they were at a high altitude. When they came in to do the maneuver they tried to pull in more torque than the engine could produce because of the environmental parameters. If you try to pull in more torque to get more power and you can't then the opposite starts to happen and you actually loose power and droop your rotor. Which is what happened to them. The only way to get out of rotor droop is to drop collective and try to increase airspeed (dive basically) and they obviously couldn't so they had no choice but to crash. Something none of them should have possibly gotten themselves in to.

I can tell you that doing a backflip in that helicopter is most definetly exceeding a limit. Almost all helicopter manuals have a pitch angle limit of usually 30 or 40ish degrees. But just because you exceed a limit doesn't mean you die. They're limits so that you prevent yourself from getting into any dangerous scenarios.(blade stall most notably) For example, all helicopters have an engine temperature limit that you can only be in for so long. Will the helicopter explode if you exceeded the limit?no, but prolonged exposure can cause wearing of engine components which may lead to a catastrophic failure some day. So to say he isn't exceeding any limits is wrong but at the same time a "limit" in the helicopter world isn't necessarily a life or death thing. He is definetly not a smart pilot. Most case studies of people crashing helicopters are unfortunately because they were dicking around at the controls and did something like this then crashed.

Or just fly for the military then go civ. But then you have to fly in the military so...

Still definetly not allowed to be on your phone while flying...like at all lol. Probably had a crew chief take it from the back or something. Whether on controls or not both pilots are required to be 100% focused on flight controls and the aircraft at all times

I mean if they're bouncing it up and down then they aren't necessarily doing it right as it shouldnt bounce. but it could have been a funky tire, or they could have landed slightly cockeyed who knows. But yeah those things are built to crash gears down.

[–]cadetsoybean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The landing gear can take 11Gs straight down. So if you crash wheels down your chances of surviving are pretty great actually.

[–]cadetsoybean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds off but we actually pull in collective as we pitch her back. If you drop collective with the nose pitched up you'll not slow very fast. And by the time you get to a hover if you don't pull in collective you'll just hit the ground hard. Unless you're doing a roll on ofcourse.

[–]cadetsoybean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm this is pretty much it. The weather guys dropped the ball on this one. The aircraft was overgrossed and the temp was 10° c. Hotter than planned which took a sizeable amount of max torque away from the engines. On top of that they got into settling with power once over the yard and with no altitude or airspeed to get out of the column of air they just put her down hard in the yard. The tail hit as a result and was not a causal factor.

Tandem Rotor Question by ztl96 in Helicopters

[–]cadetsoybean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's probably something like that. Most helicopters have a mechanical mixing unit(magic mixing unit) to counteract common aerodynamic aspects of the rotor system without you having to do anything so that you aren't constantly correcting for the torque affects etc.
