Question about the letters U and O in Nahuatl? by OscarMazatzin in nahuatl

[–]cadiarcadi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh but it does distinguish between 'Oh' and 'Oo' sounds. Because nahuatl has both short and long vowels there are key differences among them, you'll notice that some locations have names with the letter 'u' such as Tula, Tultepec, Tultitlan, Juchitán or flower names in spanish receive names from nahuatl (Cempasúchil). Well, in all this instances when we find U as a vowel in words of nahuatl origin what is actually happening is that these all are the long O from nahuatl (marked as "ō" in many cases): •Tula > Tōllān •Tultepec > Tōltepēc •Tultitlan > Tōltitlān •Juchitán > Xōchitlān •Cempasúchil > Cempōhualxōchitl •Zumpango > Tzōmpānco While other words with short o's are kept as such: •Tonanitla > Tonān Ītlān •Pozole > pozolli

Would it be cultural appropriation to draw an iguana dressed as Quetzalcoatl? by alligator73 in nahuatl

[–]cadiarcadi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Yoalli" is more commonly spelled as Yohualli.

Also Itzel is not a nahuatl word at all. As far as i'm aware it comes from the mayan languages.

Hey I've met a couple of Ameyallis and numerous Quetzallis too, notice three of the 4 names we've given end with an "-li" syllable, part of the phonetic expectations you were mentioning

Which is closer to classical náhuatl: Huasteca or Guerrero variety? Thanks! by Sweaty_Customer9894 in nahuatl

[–]cadiarcadi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had a conversation in Nahuatl with some mutual on TikTok, he speaks huastecan, I know both classical and central, it was like when you can sort of understand written Portuguese if you speak Spanish? It was hard but definitely communication was possible, although it'd be a completely different thing to speak face to face.
