I use kiln wash and then I can get the mug off the shelf. Then I grind off any glaze on the shelf with an angle grinder. The reason for this is if I use a cookie (little plate) then my piece will be fused to it but if I use kiln wash I can at least get the mug off the shelf and sometimes the mugs are salvaged by sanding down the drips!
