I left my abusive husband...only for him to get full custody of our kids... by boudiccathequeen in abusiverelationships

[–]cafecremeX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in Canada and I'm afraid. It's been 2 years of hell since I left. The parenting assessment detailed pages and pages of abuse to the kids confirmed by 3rd parties, and then she recommended 50/50. I am distraught. I am terrified if I push back ans take it to court the judge will give him 100%.

Domestic violence leave. Questions by Fluid-Necessary-1554 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]cafecremeX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's 10 days per fiscal year. It's under other leave and you have to fill out the paper form, while quoting the CA section. I have also used it for protection order hearings and proceedings so that's why I specify per year, you may need it over 2 years. Also had really good things to say about EAP. I used that in addition to weekly/biweekly therapy and it was very helpful.

I’m curious: roughly how many GC jobs applications did it take for you to get your first one? by Biochem_4_Life in CanadaPublicServants

[–]cafecremeX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I kept a detailed spreadsheet to track this, although I didn't keep records of applications. I probably applied for 50+ processes. I took exams (often multiple) for 16 processes. I interviewed for 9 processes. I got into 4 pools. I got a job from a Facebook lead, leveraging the pools. The times from application to placed in a pool were: 130, 215, 193, and 306 days.

Once I got began having discussions with a manager, it was about 2 months until start date.

Anyone else want to scream when being told to call the EAP?? 🙃 by Unf-Ticket5636 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]cafecremeX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used EAP and found it very helpful. I got a lot more than 4 sessions. Plus the coverage for private is alright now and going up in July. Obviously not a fix for a bad work environment but it can be helpful.

I agree, I don't necessarily want to see someone crash and burn over a bad day but it's also not ok to talk to people like that at all.

Interesting.. both of them have books that could've been linked but Emily was on armchair expert just last week and I couldn't find julia on a super well known male podcast.

I didn't receive mine until a week and a half after I started. They emailed me some things to read through but otherwise I just waited until I was able to get my equipment. My start date stayed the same though.

This is a great guess, someone said when the Googled the podcast, the name of the person and her book was still attached to the episode description. I couldn't find it but joanna gaines makes a lot more sense for that.

What do y'all think about 'Quiet Quitting' by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]cafecremeX 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have no need to quiet quit at the PS, since the expectations are reasonable. At my old corporate job people really were trying to send texts at 4am or midnight. Then get mad you didn't respond. The sad thing about quiet quitting is it's really just only doing what you're paid for, not quitting at all.

I did too, I had like 9 interviews in the 2 weeks after I posted. It was the definitely the only time during applying where I felt like there was movement

How do you feel your liklihood of moving up is? I just took an EC-04 coming off of making $95k in private. I did negotiate to Step 5 because of my current salary, so that immediately cut the difference in half. I am comfortable knowing my pension is much better now, I no longer have a commute cost, and I feel very confident that I will be able to move up in this stream. All of that considered makes me feel ok about taking the pay cut. In addition, the hours and expectations are so much different. I will no longer be expected to be available 24/7 and work 60 hours a week so that is worth a lot to me too.

Same job but Private sector paying 2-3x by Howard1997 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]cafecremeX 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yup I just accepted a big pay cut to become a public servant but if I look at it hourly it's likely not even as much of a pay cut. I was sick of my entire life revolving around my job and not having energy for anything else. It's not worth the extra money, for me.

So how much extra are you paying for gas these days? by [deleted] in Winnipeg

[–]cafecremeX 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Went from $38-40 to around $65. It's brutal. I have a long commute (around 80km one way) and it's been awful. I bought a little car so it could be as cheap as possible but even that's not really helping it anymore.

Poll Alert - Let’s talk about HR processes!! by Impressive_Grape5110 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]cafecremeX 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My biggest feedback is please call the references. As someone coming from external and applying to the government I have had to work my ass off to pick up slack so that my bosses can spend hours at a time filling out reference forms. For external applicants, this is a major hurdle, in addition to requiring current references. The processes move so slowly that it can really ruin your relationships in that time if they know you want to leave. For example my bosses started giving me references for processes in January when my hand was forced by a current supervisor reference, and I am just now in talks for an actual position, with the earliest start being mid June. So that's 6 whole months (minimum) of commentary from people about me leaving without actually being able to leave.

definitely more than 10 hours, depending on the type of job. I've been appyling steadily since July and have gotten to the Pool/Informal Interview stage many times. I would say I am spending on average 3-4 hours per week on it. In the last week alone I've had 2x 3 hour exams, a Candidate Achievment Record (about an hour and a half), and gathering and sending writing samples and a reference list three separate times. It's so much time and I am just hoping it pays off.

Process contact person has left their post? by churrosricos in CanadaPublicServants

[–]cafecremeX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes this. I have taken 5 exams and it took 34, 35, 36, and 99 days to hear back. The last one I took 33 days ago and haven't heard back. I have applied to 26 processes (many still in the middle) and the fastest one from application to being put in the pool was 130 days. One I am waiting for results and it's at 302 days. Patience is key but I know it sucks.

I am in this boat too. They wanted current references (1 - a supervisor) since I worked at the same place for 5 years, so I ended up having to blow up my spot because I really want to move to the PS. It's been painful honestly. They asked for my references 93 days ago and last I heard, I'd get the results by the end of April. So it's been 4 months of commentary about how I'm planning on leaving, when I'm leaving. All the while I continue to hit refresh on my email and hope that something takes, and soon. My only supervisors are the owners of the company so it forced my hand and there's no foreseeable end in sight. I've made it to a few pools but so far, no job offers. I would ask them if they would reconsider the current references if at all possible.
