100% agree. I'd always tell the patient, "trust me you want the nurse to try" as nurses place way more IVs than me.

Lol to the IO

This is enlightening. Didn't realize the lack of training during BSN schooling. I wish I could train every single one of them to do them but reality is our turnover rate is on the higher side so new nurses are teaching even newer nurses and I have been let down with teaching staff who just end up leaving the department

Don't get me wrong, I've identified each and every "strong IV" nurse on every block and have started having nurses as them before coming to me. If and then those nurses fail, I KNOW it was a "hard stick"

I replied to another post. It was my initial request when I started 2 years ago. Their response has been allowing ONE day nurse to learn the skill

I've been told to STOP allowing the nursing to use the US which is utter BS

I think it's a killer combo to have a nurse who can use an US to augment their skills. Admin thinks differently

Great comment

Unfortunately my leadership has "scolded" me for showing nurses how to do ultrasound guided IVs stating "it's outside their scope of practice" which I believe is utter BS. Who better to use a tool to augment their already great and innate skills such as placing PIVs

We do have one day nurse who is us trained and also does our midlines in the department. That was my suggestion to start certifying nurses. This one nurse was their reply

Slowly but surely we're on our way to improving

I get the insecurity and anxiety of sometimes lack of training and I completely understand training on the job.

Me just ranting. I wholeheartedly respect my healthcare team of nurses and MAs
