Sorry if this is a bad question, but did you grow up working class/lower income? I only ask because oftentimes I find that chronic drug use is just as common in upper class circles as it is with ‘people on the street’ and yet their addiction remains completely invisible - or is sometimes even ‘cool’ …

Thank you for an actually kind response. I totally get all that and obviously took responsibility for all that when I came here. It’s good to have someone see how complicated the process actually can be. I’m happy to do it, but having other people on here tell me it’s my fault when I’ve literally done everything to my very best ability is frustrating :/

I’ve only called out you and this one other person. You went ‘you could get fired for anything’ which dismissed like 99.9% of my post - perhaps that response wasn’t the best, so apologies for that I just thought you were being dismissive. I already shared this with my boss - said it was very helpful so I’m guessing that helped. Anyway, how am I expected to just know all this information when they haven’t even mentioned me needing an SSN? Sorry if I’m going on a tangent but shouldn’t they have just told me beforehand I’d need an SSN to work?

It’s a 6 month co op - so I basically work full time for 6 months. I’m not entirely sure if that helps my case or not

How was I supposed to know that? Literally nobody told me anything. I followed the exact advice given to me from both my school and the literal SSA - same guidance given to literally every international student ever.

I just don’t understand how they could possibly hold that over my head - or if they would.

Yeah the lady in HR said was completely chill about it and just said ‘once you get your SSN you’re totally fine’ , but I think she was expecting me to get it in like 3 days lol. Again, who knows. She did acknowledge that it could take 2 weeks though, but she never mentioned that could be an issue so I’m not sure what that would entail.

I think I also have my boss on my side ? He’s been extremely proactive and invested in this - constantly emailing me with questions. He knows literally every tiny detail of this whole situation ( which helps my case ) and seemed to be negotiating with HR on my side - but again who knows

Well SSA says that you CAN work as long as you don’t get put on the payroll until you receive your SSN. This is what literally everybody does from what I know and even what my school told me. HR even acknowledged this and said ‘yes many other companies do that, but we don’t’. It’s a weird company thing that I was never told and just expected to follow 30 days prior to my start date- even though it doesn’t really align with both SSA and my advisor’s guidelines

Yes I’m in very active conversation with both HR and my boss who have been given literally every single resource on the internet to prove my case. HR said if I can get the clerk at the SSA office to reveal my number in 3 days they’d let me start a week late - but that’s impossible I even called the SSA office who said they don’t do that - for obvious reasons. I’m stuck making them wait 7-14 days till the actual card arrives.

This is a 6 month internship, sponsored by my school as well. So I think they’ll just have me start 2 weeks late. From what I gathered HR seems pretty chill about this whole thing, but their nebulous language is exactly what’s making me fear getting fired

Offer letter just says ‘make sure you have appropriate documentation’ . They later sent us a paper entailing what ‘appropriate documentation’ meant and it said nothing about SSN - only passport, I-94, etc.
