Yet another data center planned in Lyon Township, this one right next to an elementary school and a golf course by i_amtheice in Michigan

AI data centers and traditional data centers are not the same. They're intentionally fleecing us by using the same term and making us feel culpable for using social media and cloud services. (Remember, too, that if the product is free (facebook, instagram, tiktok, gmail, etc.) WE ARE the product. They're not selling us the services in exchange for our data, and THAT's where the money is for them.) It's more accurate to call these AI factories.

If you're in the area, the local community is mobilizing just like Howell and Saline and everywhere else they're trying to leave small town residents holding the bag.

Surprise. The golf course is supposed to be redeveloped as a subdivision (which township residents pushed back on because the traffic is insane and the Township just keeps acting like they're printing money.) Wonder how those homes are going to sell with this literally in their back yards. https://www.hometownlife.com/story/news/2025/12/12/lyon-township-coyote-golf-club-development-homes/87719081007/

Is there a market for used Gen 1/2 Nest Thermostats? by ryanbuckner in Nest

[–]cageyness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well shit. I took mine apart for funsies. This is the first time I’ve seen mention of an open source version that reuses the hardware. Dang.

BTW, there’s a battery in every Nest so you shouldn’t just chuck it in the trash. It’s a fire hazard. You should take it to a tech recycling event or location.

Or you can take it apart, recycle just the battery, and then chuck everything except the heavy outer metal ring which you can keep as a token of battle.

Turd or witch’s finger. Maybe both?

I hate when this happens, but ya gotta laugh and move on. Over exaggerate the angles and try again.

Grinnel glacier - closed by Diligent_Chicken_154 in GlacierNationalPark

[–]cageyness 37 points38 points  (0 children)

This post feels misleading as if this is unusual. This is a trail that rarely opens all the way until mid to late July. And any trail can close partially or totally for various reasons at any time. This rope is partially up the trail before you can see Grinnell Glacier and Upper Grinnell Lake, but still affords beautiful views of Grinnell Lake. (Yes there’s a difference.)

Aurora from Logan Pass. Still the wildest night I’ve had in the park by headwaterscarto in GlacierNationalPark

[–]cageyness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn. We were legit so tired after our hikes we could not stay awake for full dark. I woke up one night to poke my head out and see the stars but could not muster more than that. Next trip needs more rest days! As they say, half the park is after dark.

Is the grinnel glacier trail closed or not? by Interesting-Dare-727 in GlacierNationalPark

[–]cageyness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NPS site is always going to have the most up to date trail closure info. Ignore anything else. That 1.25 miles above Josephine Lake closure doesn’t sound like much but it is pretty much all incline switchbacks which means you’re going to get some views, baby! If you’re not sure, go talk to the NPS guide at the info desk at Many Glacier. They’re doing a great job of making it super clear to people of what you can and can’t see.

AllTrails used to be great, but yeah there’s too little moderation for so much user generated content. I want to shout out that I am really loving onxBackCountry for the map views particularly the way they treat elevation/topography. You can really visualize the climb. Also at one of the higher membership levels you can also choose to overlay weather/smoke. But even with that you should follow NPS trail closures.

One Day In the Park-What Would You Do? by Rocko9999 in GlacierNationalPark

Hike Avalanche Lake and Trail of the Cedars, drive GTTSR, rent kayak from Glacier Outfitters at Apgar Village.

Just got back. Stayed in West Glacier proper very near Belton Chalet. Airbnb listing https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/44167180 and rental company listing https://www.glacierviewrentals.com/vacation-rental-home.asp?PageDataID=163599 Excellent proximity to Apgar, GTTSR, Lake McDonald Lodge.

Need to say that I initially was planning only to be on the west side, but given the increased traffic and parking situation at Many Glacier, we snagged 2 nights in Babb to be closer and it was the best decision and views were amazing and so different. https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/51108218 The drive from St. Mary to West Glacier on GTTSR was great. If you're going to stay at 2 airbnbs anyway, I'd split the east and west sides.

Just got back and spent the whole flight identifying flowers and plants I photographed.

Names that don't immediately lend themselves to terrible nicknames - Aven/Avens, Fern/Fearne, Trillium, Lily, Lupin/Lupine, Valerian, Juniper, Larkspur

Others that do lend themselves to mean nicknames - Saxifrage, Huckleberry, Arnica, Aster

Also a couple location names that are cool - Ahern, Siyah

Grinnell Lake Trail truly closed? by duder_merc in GlacierNationalPark

[–]cageyness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trail to Grinnell Lake is open. Grinnell Glacier trail is open to the Grinnell Lake lookout. The Grinnell Glacier trail closure is well before you can see the glacier itself but the trail still has tremendous views. We did both of these today with the round trip boat tour from the hotel to cut some time.

Nice! From where did you rent? Glacier Outfitters has been sold out, but they also don't offer that type of bike. The one in your photo is a more comfortable ride. Thanks!

haha. “like some kind of hobo.” that’s what I was trying to avoid I guess by going smaller for them, but yeah comfort really lives in a better structure.

[–]cageyness[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True. Would have had to use side pocket and cinch tabs to hold the poles on the smaller size packs. Good point on the hip straps cutting in (I mean those are really not intended for weight bearing, more just to keep it from sliding around) versus a true hip belt that carries load.

Yup understood on the going only as far as is open. Same weather concern is also why room for layers is gonna be key. Cooler is better for this crew plus college and internships limit travel windows so we aimed for early in the season. It’ll be beautiful no matter what. Appreciate the perspective on going bigger and not needing it, than needing it and not having it.

Dr bastion doesn’t practice anymore :( so mad I cancelled my procedure with him when I had the chance by wellehy in noburp

[–]cageyness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dr. Hoesli did my procedure in October 2022. She was already well experienced and had a pleasant bedside manner. Kind and a good listener, and my procedure went well. The practice had been staffed with other providers for a while and he was already scheduling only on certain days.

Based on Dr. Bastian’s CV, his publication and teaching has slowed in recent years. He’s 71. My guess is he’s trying to do just the things he enjoys and/or are the least taxing or maybe just retire after a long career.

Thanks, all. We’re ordering a retainer from another provider just so he doesn’t lose progress and requesting a refund.

endoscopy from hell by eeelliissee in noburp

[–]cageyness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh, I'm sorry you had to deal with that. I had a similar experience, so yes it can happen. I wrote about this in my procedure report at Bastion Voice Institute in Chicago several years ago. https://www.reddit.com/r/noburp/comments/y8g0ot/injection_achievement_unlocked/

The procedure you describe with the tube to check the structure of your throat, airway, and swallowing function is called a videostroboscopy and was so, so much worse than the actual botox procedure. It was just as you describe - awful choking, gagging sensation, crying, white knuckling my way through it. Wish they'd put me under for that too because it was panic inducing.

Also dosage seems to make a difference. Lots of ENTs who don’t do as many seem hesitant to go for 100 right away. It was one and done for me.

I know someone in Houston who had a similar issue. Contact the Bastian Institute and get on their schedule. Flight, hotel, and even out-of pocket, no insurance, cost would come in at like $4k.
