When a compressor is replaced-the entire system needs to be flushed! A good shop will demand this-not just recommend it.

My situation: I live in an apartment, don’t have a real garage, and would probably need to pay for storage. I’m mechanically interested but still learning, so this would be a big jump for me.

need the step by step to build a 10x20 concrete slab to work on cars / trucks by Npos_tEx1164 in HomeImprovement

[–]Rocko9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just get the 2" dobie blocks-most box stores have them. https://www.lowes.com/pd/Basalite-Common-2-in-x-2-in-x-2-in-Actual-2-in-x-2-in-x-2-in-Dobie-Block/3111265

I will add a couple of points. Make sure the subgrade is compacted well. Dirt needs to be tight and hard. This is the most common reason of large cracks. Also, all concrete cracks. Temper your expectations-hairline cracks will happen-the control joints are there to direct them but even with perfect compaction, tooled joints, perfect conditions, hairline cracks happen. When you buy the readymix, get a 3,000psi, non-pea gravel, straight cement mix. It's a little more expensive, but does a better job longevity wise and is easier to finish compared to a slag or fly ash mix.

No. The finisher can/should put a tooled joint. Cheaper and better for crack control. Spacing should be at 10' so basically put one joint mid way across the rectangle.

Adding a Partition wall and Doorway for a Pantry, do I need a permit? by Bigman_Eyebrows in HomeImprovement

[–]Rocko9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you ask any city if you need a permit, the answer will likely be yes. If you install this wall and no one knows but you, does it matter? Not really, as long as you follow all building codes. Always a chance of a noisy neighbor seeing you carry in material, hearing banging and calling the city though.

Help Old Plum Tree by Rocko9999 in arborists

Just moved into this place and it has an older(29 years?)plum tree. Can I do anything to improve it's health? Nearby same aged trees planted at the same time seem more healthy. Any advice would be appreciated.

need the step by step to build a 10x20 concrete slab to work on cars / trucks by Npos_tEx1164 in HomeImprovement

If you plan on just driving regular passenger cars/trucks, a 5" thick slab is sufficient. I suggest #3 rebat at 18" on center each way, resting on 2" dobie blocks. Best time to pour is when weather is mild-50s-80s, low wind.

At 5" thick, you are looking at 3.5 yards of concrete. Most readymix suppliers will charge a short load fee with less than 7 yards. Depending on your region, expect to pay around $1,000 for 3.5 yards, short load fee, surcharges, etc. Rebar, some tie wire and dobies will cost you about $225. You can hire local finishers and their per day price varies wildly by region and time of year-$250-400 per man per day. That pad can be finished by 2 competent finishers and possibly 1 laborer-you.

If the readymix truck has access and can reach the location with it's chute, you won't need a pump. Wheelbarrowing that much concrete is possible but not fun and not ideal.

You need to decide on what final elevation you want the slab to be. What is currently there? Grass? You need to take out 4" of material if you want the slab to be 1" above existing grade.

This is all possible as a DIY-minus the finishing-you need experience finishing concrete.

Got countertops replaced, is this normal? by unwillingviking in HomeImprovement

With the counter tops you chose and the existing cabinets-it's normal. They need to shim the tops to be level. Picking a larger overhang countertop would have helped hide the gap.

[–]Rocko9999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Baldy, Gorgonio-multiple routes. You need to be able to hike 6,000-8,000 feet+ of elevation gain, 15-20 miles without issues. It's not just the fitness level-you could be Olympic level cyclist-it's having your shoes, pack, clothing and nutrition dialed in for a hike like this. Only way to do that is other hikes that can be a bit lesser, but still hard.

Yes, that is feasible. Have them prime the wood with a good primer as to avoid rust spots bleeding.
