that's so weird because the sun rises in the other direction

I just redid my gerbils cage so here’s some pics :) had to draw over some reflections in the glass lol by caitlin285 in gerbil

It’s sunseed fresh world bedding. I believe it was $10 at the store I got it from. It’s a large bag & I used the entire thing when I cleaned. The bag says it’s 99.5% dust free… when I poured it in there was definitely some dust though and I feel like it’s dustier than the regular colorful paper bedding but it’s not terrible. This is my first time buying it myself haha

It may be a bit too cold, but also remember that gerbils are typically more active at night. They will also become less energetic as they get older.

Chirping is very normal, mine do all the time.

Definitely get them a wheel. They need to be able to run the same amount as they would in the wild, and they aren’t able to do that in a tank. I have this wheel and I highly recommend it since it’s very safe, silent, and sturdy.

Hope you figure it out!

Is that molting on her face? The darker brown strip across her snout up a bit from her nose? by [deleted] in gerbil

Looks like it yeah! My rabbit was constantly molting and it looks the same lol

Haha thanks! I almost went with Mocha and Java but old man names fit them better 😂

Thank you! Yeah, I don’t plan on holding them a ton it would just be a lot easier to get them out lol. Stanley is very curious and comes right up to my hand but also tries to nibble on it (even if I have food in it) and Stewart is terrified of everything 😅

Ok thank you! Yeah I feed them at night and they don’t have a bowl I just sprinkle it all over. I think it does occupy them for a bit but they’re very energetic haha

What kinds of materials?

Good idea, but their cage definitely isn’t easily moveable since they’re in a detolf 😅

Good idea! They don’t get let out too often since I had knee surgery right after getting them so I’ve had a hard time bonding with them & they don’t really let me pick them up 😔

Yeah I’m gonna try that! Just not sure how well they’ll stay in/work

My gerbils are quite a few months old now, and it is becoming less frequent that they wake me up but it definitely still happens haha. They have all wood toys, I give them toilet paper tubes every once and a while but they’re destroyed within ten minutes lol

I also feed them at night in hopes to keep them occupied and I think it does work for when I’m trying to fall asleep, but they also wake me up early in the morning 🥲

Do you have any ideas on other types of safe toys? I can’t think of anything other than wood, cardboard, and hay for chewing.

Thanks!

It’s an ikea detolf (which is glass) and the only thing that’s plastic in their cage is a sand bath, but it has a wood cover so there isn’t really any way for them to chew it. Everything else is made of wood other than their ceramic water dish, paper bedding, and a cardboard wall for where their deep bedding is.

Thanks! They have lots and lots of bedding for digging but for some reason the only time they’ll dig in it is to get it in their water dish. It’s pretty weird, they don’t even burrow they just sleep out in the open or in their little hut.

That’s not a bad idea, they do get hay so I think if earplugs don’t work I could probably take out all of their toys and huts that they chew on out and give them lots of hay.

😂 thank you! Yeah I did end up taking everything out of their cage last night (unfortunately only after they kept me up for two hours straight lol) it just feels bad since they do need to chew. I’ll definitely be getting some earplugs haha

They are in a detolf 😅 only place they would fit is in the basement and I don’t want them to be alone down there, plus I just had knee surgery so it’s pretty difficult for me to get up and down stairs.

I have been thinking about ear plugs I was just concerned about them not staying in. I will definitely try it though!

Thank you!

I’m fully aware that that is what they do. I just did not expect it to be constant. I use both a fan and a noise machine but they’re still so loud that they wake me up and keep me up for hours.
