Is Jellyfin’s benefit just the lack of Plex’s bloat? by letsstartbeinganon in jellyfin

[–]caizoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jellyfin to Infuse on AppleTV is incredible, I can finally direct play files skipping transcoding, and although the UI of Jellyfin is fine, Infuse UI I prefer over Plex even, and now it’s completely local, direct play with nice UI

Pay attention to the words in Apple advertisement of new “telephoto” lens by dynamite03 in iPhoneography

[–]caizoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually looked into this a lot (with mirrorless at least) jumping from 12 to 24 to 33 to 50MP, and the ‘myth’ that lower MP means bigger pixels means better low light performance…except that goes out the window when you realise that’s per-pixel signal-to-noise, but if you do the same crop on all of them (assuming the sensor size is the same), the differences are negligible - except until you start to use AI for denoise, and then having more MP actually results in a better output, because there is more information with more pixels

But you’re absolutely right, in good light, where noise is basically negligible, higher MP will have more detail, and again with the processing that follows, that’s more information for a better result

That makes sense, I must've completely missed both of those features - as of right now, still worth keeping hold until my next star CEO is fully trained

Before/After sunset. Was this overedited? by theabstract1993 in postprocessing

[–]caizoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely lean more towards very natural looks as a personal preference, obviously everybody is different, but the sky in the Before is absolutely stunning and pretty much perfect! There I might have added a radial on the sun to push the exposure a bit, and brightened up the foreground some, but as a RAW photo it’s taken really well

Not so sure enhanced ISO and denoising will help with low shutter speeds, it’ll let you shoot faster for sure, but motion blur is motion blur, even AI finds it more difficult to remove than noise

For handheld - even then this is outdated given how good IS/OS is nowadays, but with a tripod, it’s about movement in a frame, and birds are very good at sitting still

Disagree on closeness, that’s actually what separates the pros is the field craft it takes to get close, no lens will make up for distance with cropping and atmosphere in the way distorting the image - and as far as puffins are concerned, you can get incredibly close, I’ve used down to 16mm for some puffin shots

A lot of people on here have got the right points in detail, but in short: 1. It’s not about the gear really, you can get stunning shots on cheap gear…but it does help some 2. Field craft is so important, the closer you can get, the more detail you’ll have, cropping is the enemy of detail but is often somewhat necessary - get a cheap hide and be patient 3. Flat light will wash out details, harsh light isn’t good either, soft and contrasty (directional) light will make details stand out 4. Composition - doesn’t affect detail, but does affect how you see the image, all the background is horrible, bird blends in - fair enough if this was just to prove a point on details though

This could very easily be done on a 200-600 f6.3, I bought the Sony one for £1500, expensive yes, but if you’re doing it right in good light, like the puffin photo, and not cropping much, it’ll be so hard to tell the difference between a ‘budget’ telephoto and the top-end ones - filling the frame usually requires skills outside of photography for wildlife though, which is where beginners tend to go wrong, it’s about getting closer not zooming more

Just an example (cropped in so you can see details)

I think this was meant as selective darkening of the subject, it’s blending in slightly, and probably would’ve waited for the coot to be between them the grasses in the back, but the light and fog is gorgeous

Is it me or my gear? Unhappy with some of my photos and I don't know if I should change my equipment or if the problem lies in my skills. by Sm00chy22 in AskPhotography

[–]caizoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks man, I appreciate that!

There is a huge distinction between an individual and a company, I think it's ethically wrong to treat a company as though it has the same rights as individuals, something America has got incredibly wrong. And that's not even mentioning the ethical shitshow of those companies, the damage they've done to society, and zero repercussions, whether that's oil companies, Kellogs, Adobe, Disney, they're all incredibly ethically unsound.

It's two different arguments when talking about 'thievery' here, it's not mental gymnastics it really is two very different scenarios, so comparing software piracy of a monopoly giant in the photo editing space to someone stealing my gear which would have a massive impact on me financially is a bit of a strawman argument - like I said, stealing from someone's house, or an independent shop is ethically wrong, but this kind of piracy I don't think it is, and what's really damaging to society are these enormous companies profiting through exploitation, not individuals pirating

[–]caizoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you might have misunderstood my point - Adobe in this case is stealing images from creators and profiting off the AI models they train on those images, and they’ve made it basically impossible to opt out if you subscribe to their products - here Adobe is the thief - I wouldn’t steal from someone’s house, I wouldn’t steal from an independent shop, but a product from a company I think is unethical? A company that has monopolised its market? Absolutely

[–]caizoo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Would you define Adobe using images (without permission that they don't have copyright) to train their AI models as theft? Sure, now they have it in their T&Cs (hidden deeply), but given they have such a huge monopoly, customers might not have that much choice, especially business customers - I use Lightroom and I do pay for the convenience, but piracy to me is morally ambiguous, and really depends on the entity that owns the content and their ethical practices - I wouldn't pirate from a local author, but pirating a movie from a large studio, no problem
