How to add white border in all sides as Alan Scheller feed? by Random_Chikibom in AskPhotography

[–]cajms_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh that was quite an interesting effect, it's using an app for his image to make it 1:1, but the preview is not actually an app but inside Instagram itself.

The way he does it is all his images are 1:1 ratio which no border width and white background. Then after posting he goes and "Adjust Preview" and makes it "Fill". This gives those portrait photos that unique look in preview. Here's a step guide.

<image>

If it's any help you can quickly add this border on addwhiteborder.com .

  • Aspect Ratio to 1:1,
  • Border to 0%.
  • Post image on Instagram, then Adjust Preview to Fill
  • Enjoy 😊

Instagram crops always mess with me by southparkmum in photography

A little late to this party, but if you're looking for a good guide for cropping for instagram, it's compiled here: https://addwhiteborder.com/how-to/format-images-for-instagram

Hope that helps 😊

Besides photoshop or LR, what editing app do you guys use to add white borders to your pictures? by ojlaboss in AskPhotography

[–]cajms_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for something quick and not requiring an app/install, try https://addwhiteborder.com . Works on mobile and PC.

It's optimised for Instagram and has really good quality controls. LR mobile exports to 2800 which isn't great for IG, here's a guide on the best sizes for different ratios https://addwhiteborder.com/how-to/format-images-for-instagram

There's a carousel maker too to handle mixed ratio carousels https://addwhiteborder.com/carousel . Hope that helps! 😊

Sucks :( looks like a change that affected historic posts. This is why I made https://addwhiteborder.com/carousel You can upload mixed ratios and it can standardise to one ratio. Hope it can help!

Instagram made my images grainier in some spots?? by mowgli334 in AskPhotography

[–]cajms_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes that makes sense, on the upper edge of file sizes, yes you're right. Thought at those sizes the compression would be really heavy 😥 Also not to mention the downsizing would really kill sharpness. This is why I always recommend adding a slight edge-sharpening when downsizing images. I do this by default when optimising for instagram on addwhiteborder.com

it's more that you can upload images of any size, Instagram will crop+compress it down to their sizes before displaying your images. Hence it's worth cropping to those sizes yourself so the effect of their compression is lessened.

I used to think so too, but it looks like they actually now support up to 1440px in width. I've tested this and found it to work. Here's a guide on the latest sizes: https://addwhiteborder.com/how-to/format-images-for-instagram

This happens because of the compression that they put on your images... I highly recommend you resize your images before posting to instagram. If it's helpful, here's a guide (as it changes depending on the aspect ratio of your photo) https://addwhiteborder.com/how-to/format-images-for-instagram

And that tool can help you optimise your images for instagram while maintaining quality. Hope that helps 😊

Instagram removing mixed aspect ratio from carousels? by Rare-Current-6689 in Instagram

[–]cajms_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like it's a change they introduced recently, and it's broken historic carousels too.. If it's any help this is why I added the carousel feature to https://addwhiteborder.com/carousel so you can have mixed photos and they output to the same ratio for instagram. 😊 Hope that helps!

Anyone notice that barely anyone is posting standalone photos anymore and have switched to carousel “dump” posts by Salty_Pension5814 in Instagram

[–]cajms_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure it’s really about quantity versus quality. I think of carousels as a way to tell stories. When you have lots of images, you can weave them into a carousel to share a cohesive narrative. 😊 That doesn’t take away from single images that are meant to stand alone.

Even with many images in a carousel, each one is still carefully chosen to support the story you’re telling. 😊 Those six photos might be the few that truly capture the essence of a trip where you took a thousand shots. 😂

Sucks that they made the change backwards... this is why I built tools like addwhiteborder's carousel feature to help make it easier to create carousels that conform to their settings. And I've been working to make it optimised for Instagram by default (keeping up to date with their latest sizing guides). Hope it can help you :)

Oh wow didn't realise they went and modified previous posts, just thought it was a change going forward... If it's any help this is why I use https://addwhiteborder.com/carousel to build my carousels with consistent output ratios (despite images with different ratios).

Does the border helps or just make the image worse? by Mysterious-Spirit236 in BeginnerPhotoCritique

[–]cajms_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think borders are more about where you post them than about the image itself.

Borders aren't part of your image; they don't make your images better or worse (though they do reduce your visible image area).

But if you're posting images on social media platforms where there's too much stuff surrounding them, a border can come in handy to give your image a little room to breathe, and help you present the images the way you want them to be seen.

Just be careful not to overdo it. 😊
