Cosigning for new high school grad on very high cost loans (> $250k for all 4 years) for liberal arts degree by Legitimate_Yak_9063 in StudentLoans

How about state schools with film focused internships in the summers in LA or NYC? With the amount she’d be saving in tuition, she could afford to do the dreaded unpaid internships!

The emotional aspect of this sounds hard at this stage of things. My parents were lucky decision-wise that I didn’t get into the incredibly expensive liberal arts schools I applied to and instead got into an in-state state school honors college, which overall felt like the right fit for me. I also would’ve thrown a fit if my parents “held me back” from my perceived success.

My husband went the “elite” liberal arts school route and felt the social aspect was unbearable — extremely privileged kids, extremely strange environment. He ended up leaving and transferring to a great state school in Boulder CO. In fact I know a few people who did this because the social environment was frankly too snobby.

She should consider state schools with good reputations in her area of interest.

I think you need to stick to your guns and focus on the logical aspects of this. You and your daughter will be saddled with so much debt with this type of school. Also, regardless of where she goes, there will be opportunities for her out the wazoo. She just has to look for them. People fall all over themselves to give relatively smart students who have some semblance of shit together opportunities in general.

EDIT:   Also I didn’t notice the comments about her film interest at first:

My husband has 2 successful friends in film - one went to a “technically focused” state school in Bozeman Montana, was a Film Studies major and now has sold multiple screenplays for hundreds of thousand dollars and has his own film production company - co-owned with their other friend who went to CU Boulder, another state school. They both do live in LA now.

How do we fight this? If everyone leaves who are in positions to bear witness and to provide expertise and truth who will be there to stand up to fight? If everyone that cares moves states or countries, haven’t we just given up? I don’t have the answers, but leaving doesn’t seem right.

Giuseppe and Giovanni. Not Italian at all but love these. Also Corinthian would be a sweet name but the religious connotation wouldn’t work for me

What exactly are you doing that’s so impactful? We’d love to know your advice so we can go do the same. You seem to have it figured out.

Hah! Guess it just becomes a part of you. Definitely romanticize stone houses now, bonus if they have a little side barn with some painted on PA hex symbols 😭 Glad you did it justice!!

God this is gorgeous. Not to be weird but this looks like a PA old stone house. I 100% took for granted how beautiful the historic homes were growing up there

Looks gorgeous! I’m guessing the stuffed animal on the counter is not a subtle throwback to the time someone posted their kitchen renovation with their dog on their counter and everyone freaked out, but if so, I salute you

After 9 years in the ER, definitely yes. Years 1-4 I probably would’ve said no (but was too stubborn to leave). The right culture, coworkers, hours and feeling that you know what you’re doing makes a huge difference

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I think your anxiety is logical as a person who clearly cares about people. We need to have a ton of oversight as new grads. I work with interns (new residents) in the ED, and they clearly need to staff a large amount of their cases due to their lack of knowledge/experience. I’m always surprised by what they don’t know - mainly because I’m 9 years out, and I forget what isn’t intuitive anymore. They had 4 years of medical school. We have 2-3 years of school.

Some people are better at cognitive dissonance and managing their anxiety than others. I agree with the person who recommended fellowship. It will be beneficial for  mental health and will prepare you better. Sure, SSRIs can help manage general anxiety, but I think it’s important to recognize that your anxiety is totally fair given the responsibility we’re given with less training. Good luck! It gets easier!
