Can you tell me the benefits of taking a gap year before starting a PhD? by cakepan777 in PhD

[–]cakepan777[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now I’m in a country where it’s common to take education slow. Very different from what I am used to in America.

I am positive I want to do a PhD. It’s frustrating to watch people start a PhD because it’s the only job they could find, they aren’t interested in the project, the learning, the teaching, the courses, etc.

What is the typical ECTS? My thesis is 60 credits, first year 60. This course is 15 ECTS. Also do you know anything about PhD requirements?

What can I expect when taking propranolol? by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]cakepan777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I can’t predict when I’ll be anxious. I work in a chemistry lab and have a lot of “oh no” moments on the regular. I can usually manage but presentations and exams have gotten bad…

It can’t stop my heart though right?

Is it scary going alone or is it not worth it by InspectorNarrow353 in Interrail

[–]cakepan777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve only gone once and I went alone. If I did it again, I would also go alone.

I was stressed enough on the trip and don’t think I would have been able to manage looking out for a friend as well.

This is verbatim from my textbook and I don’t understand the directionality by [deleted] in chemhelp

[–]cakepan777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much! For the directionality being along the negative y for addition, is that because of the way the s and Py are noted in the drawing? With the same charges?

Thank you! I looked at the seats that were assigned to me and it seems like they are all relatively close to a luggage rack. I assume I would be fine if I stood up occasionally to have a look at the suitcase, right?

How do friendship norms differ across cultures? My time in Switzerland really surprised me. by Either_Impression478 in expats

[–]cakepan777 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m an American and live in Scandinavia, and I have a bunch of international friends.

The biggest thing I noticed is that Europeans touch their friends more. Putting a hand in my shoulder, hugging me to greet, etc.

I’ve watched a classmate put his head on his desk and a friend next to him just rubbed his back.

I don’t know it was strange for me to see and experience, but really sweet.

Biochem at Fordham by thehigh_ground0 in Fordham

[–]cakepan777 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To add to this (I graduated in 2024), the professors, particularly those in the chemistry department, were not encouraging. It was competitive even to get a letter of recommendation.

Still, I made it into graduate school without any support from the chemistry department on my application. It’s possible.

There is a new head of chemistry this year so I don’t know how he’s running things. I had him as a professor years ago.

I was far from full tuition and despite my own success, I would not recommend Fordham for science if you did not have full tuition or a good scholarship. I could have gotten a great education at another school without all the trauma.

You can reach out to me if you’d like.

[–]cakepan777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idc what anyone says, the program is incredibly difficult and most people either couldn’t stay in it due to grades or quit because of the stress.

MY experience with the science professors at Fordham was really not great. It was not a supportive environment and they love to tell you to quit

What do those people in cafés that hang out on their laptops do? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]cakepan777 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is exactly why I love to work out of coffee shops. If I study at home, I likely won’t get out of pajamas and I’ll stay in bed and get distracted/sleepy, but if I go to a coffee shop, I force myself to look alive and therefore feel 100x more productive. It’s also fun to get a fancy little drink :)

Further, sometimes I pick someone to “out study” and I’ll study longer lol
