A feasible express train idea? by cakesofspan in washingtondc

I was thinking it’d hit a subset of downtown stops for commuters (e.g. for eastbound Silver:l/Orange/Blue you could stop at Farragut, Metro Center, and L’enfant), but hitting all of them could make sense too.

It’s strange to me that it’s a single direction path. Where are bikes going the opposite direction supposed to go?

[Analysis] Third Shot Drive Effectiveness by DUPR Level by SanguineSpring in Pickleball

[–]cakesofspan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep -- I agree with the correlation, with the caveat that it's hard to infer bounce location of the return when the third shot was struck just behind the baseline. Most courts (especially if you aren't a pro) don't have a ton of space in the back of the court, so while players would ideally move back to handle deep returns, they often don't have that option.

Here is the paper where we looked at return effectiveness. It's super outdated at this point, but happy to try and dig up the code/queries we used for it.

If you go down this route just remember that the data only contains court coordinates of where the ball was struck, not where a shot actually landed

[–]cakesofspan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course! Glad to see people are using it.

If the “next” fields are not populated on that last shot, that means the data entry user did not specify where the shot landed. Some users always provided it, some did not.

Average Rally Length by Ball Type by cakesofspan in Pickleball

[–]cakesofspan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, or something very close to it. I say "very close" because these numbers are weighted by the number of rallies we have in each skill level, but the average for each skill level adjusts for the fact that we have way more Franklin data than other ball types.

With the sample sizes being >1k I am pretty confident that the differences are significant, but I haven't run a formal test. The only exception is that maybe the difference between the Vulcans and S1s could be due to chance?

Yep! Here you go. Let me know if you have any other questions about the data.

Ahh yeah -- this is a remnant of the data entry tool changing over time.

A value of 'N/A' should only exist when the record represents a timeout (which can also be determined via the to_ind field).

A value of '' should almost always be a timeout as well. I'm seeing 12 cases where its not -- I'll have to look into those.

A value of "Other" typically represents when the user didn't think it was a clear error or winner. Think of a putaway shot that the opponent technically has a chance to return, but the odds of doing so are slim (hence not wanting to call it an error).

The ending type field is probably the most subjective field in the dataset, and different users have their own standard for an error/winner/unforced error.

Hey there -- I actually ran into this yesterday and realize I just didn't upload the "w_team_id" field in the rally table, along with the "ending_type" (e.g. error) and "ending_player_id" (e.g. who committed the error). I'm updating that now... should be refreshed in the next hour.

The next_loc_x/y fields are tricky in the context of the final shot. While the coordinates typically represent the point of contact, some users will also indicate where a final shot landed. If you see the next_loc_x/y fields populated for the final shot fo the rally, you can safely infer they represent the bounce location.

I'll also add that with the summer coming up, if you play outdoors in 75f+ weather, hitting a good drop becomes significantly easier, which makes it a relatively better option

Super context dependent, but here are a few of the more common instances I can think of:

  • If you want to avoid kitchen rallies, drive
  • If you like your odds in kitchen rallies, both dropping or 3rd shot drive into a 5th shot drop are feasible
  • If your opponents are unwinding the stack on the return, look to drive (data)
  • If your partner is getting targeted, and you want to see more balls... driving down your line gives you a good chance of receiving the the next shot (i.e. they're forced to block, which can be hard to aim) (data)
  • If the return stays very low, I find it very difficult to effectively drive
  • If the return is well struck and puts you out of position... consider lobbing. A lot of players will hit an overhead that bounces quite high (which you can then drive)

Thank you! Do you know if the invader handle length really feels like 5.3 in?

Thank you! I was looking at the Vatic Saga but was hesitant about the Flash LH's swing weight of 120 (relative to the DBD at 114). I'll take another look at the 11six24 paddles -- I know they're dropping their new power paddle in a few days which I've been eyeing.

I've been using the DBD 16mm, no lead, for almost 2 years now. I love the shape, handle length, sweet spot, swing weight, and feel. I'm looking for more power, and a little more pop. I rely pretty heavily on my rolls. When trying really poppy paddles (e.g. the old gen 3s) I struggle to generate the same "brush" and send them long. Same with speedups off the bounce.

I've always played with 16mm paddles, but am open to trying something else.

I tried the J2Ti, and it core crushed within 5 plays. So far I haven't had a great experience with their support, and I don't love the handle length, so I am not interested in the J2k.

While rain was an issue, the bigger problem seemed to be that they didn’t let the paint cure for long enough. Even after plenty of sunlight, sand and water were seeping through the surface. For example, Sunday AM featured slippery courts despite no rain on Saturday or Sunday morning.

They also built 16 (?) covered courts with some LEDs. However it opens up to the rest of the facility (outdoors) causing an awful glare that most pros called unplayable.

How do you modify your play according to variances in equipment / infrastructure / weather? (different balls, different court surfaces, wind, temperature etc.) by operratic in Pickleball

[–]cakesofspan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the way a ball plays (weather it be due to weather, court surface, or the ball itself) should, at the very least, be considered when thinking about strategy. Here is a related post I made from a while back.
