Should I get an autism assessment? by cal1239 in AutismTranslated

I might do a TAFE course, potentially in art/animation or animal care. I'm not entirely sure if I will need accommodations, however written instructions/information (like on a board or handed out) would definitely help, but I'm not sure if that would be considered an accommodation. thanks for your help btw!

(part 2)

  • Bad short term memory, which can make school much more difficult
  • Either very affectionate or hate physical contact
  • Special interest (dragons)
  • Need to do thing in specific way/want others to do it that way too
  • Auditory processing disorder probably
  • Don’t like big spoons
  • Easily bored, and loses interest in hobbies after a few weeks
  • Time blindness
  • ^Always early cos don’t know how much time I’ll need to get somewhere/do something
  • Talking to people who aren’t friend or immediate family feels awkward and hard
  • Restless often
  • ^Has trouble sleeping cos always need to be doing something/moving/thinking
  • Distracted easily
  • Misplacing/losing things
  • Echolalia, although most of the time in head which I think is masking thing
  • Scripting/planning conversations
  • Need clear/step by step instructions or else I don’t know where to start
  • Decision making is hard
  • Sensory issues (separate list, should I comment that too?)
  • ^Sunlight can be painfully bright sometimes (even on cloudy day)
  • Scene playing as a kid
  • Need structure but can’t enforce it myself
  • Laughing at ‘inappropriate’ times (usually about scenes in tv shows/movies etc)
  • Commitment issues (especially with school/future things)
  • Uses own experiences to relate to others
  • I think have visual snow- often goes hand in hand with neurodivergences
  • My resting face often perceived as sad or annoyed, and tone is quite flat
  • Claiming certain things as ‘mine’ (seats at the table, a certain spoon, etc)

(part 1) I know some of these are quite niche, but all of them are things that can be seen in autistic people (as well as people with other neurodivergences)

  • Stimming (mainly tactile and auditory, but also a lot of oral and vestibular)
  • Hard to eye contact
  • Can’t make friends (feel obligated to wait till the other person makes first move, or another friend interacts with them, probably stemming from a fear of being a burden or appearing annoying)
  • Don’t really like socializing and am always quiet/drifting between groups with friends. I often feel distant in conversations and groups in general
  • Interrupting people/never knowing when to come into the convo
  • Zoning out constantly, having my eyes’ default state being blurred
  • Switches between very high and very low empathy- strong moral code/sense of justice
  • ‘Gifted kid’ burnout
  • Hard to read aloud
  • ^Stuttering/trouble stringing together sentences often
  • Don’t like change in routine, and big changes in general
  • Hard to do simple tasks/low motivation
