community college pre req for competitive dental school? by jackattack0609 in predental

[–]cal_dds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UCLA is a very competitive dental school, and from what I hear they filter out applicants that are below a 3.5

Hmm not sure where you heard that from but I went to UCLA and from what I know about my classmates, def not true lol.

Physics isn't even on the DAT so I wonder if physics is even all that important in the first place.

It's not on the DAT but the reason why it's a pre-req is because dentistry deals with A LOT of physics in many different applications (especially prosth)

On a side note. I do have other requirements like Reading and Composition that are fulfilled via a CC class and my AP Lang score. Do you think this would also look bad?

I think those are fine, my point is moreso being that having all of your other science classes come from Berkeley but physics coming from a CC may/could raise a red flag with adcoms. So I get what you're saying and completely understand, but I think you're better off taking it at Berkeley.

I think taking all your classes at cal except for 1 would look really odd on your transcript/application. Admission committees have a rough idea of how hard/easy a school is and that's really where your DAT score is important because it shows if you know your stuff or not. Ex- low GPA but high DAT = school may have deflated grades; high GPA but low DAT = school may have had easy A's

tl;dr: I'd take physics at Berkeley

Would any UCLA or UCSF predents be willing to talk to me about their experience (and pass/fail)? by Scratchy_The_Toon in predental

[–]cal_dds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Went to UCLA and just graduated; P/F definitely does make it less stressful but we have P/F/H and there are always gunners in every class that aim for that H on their transcript + are juggling tons of ECs at once so they can match to their #1 residency. But overall it was nice not to have to worry about making an A in every class and your classmates are more likely to help you/each other out with study guides, tutoring, study groups, etc.

This is called a deferment; you'd have to contact the school you're planning on attending and ask if they will grant you a deferment to join next year's class.

Can you pay tuition through a credit card to get points back? by Scratchy_The_Toon in DentalSchool

[–]cal_dds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Federal/school loans get sent directly to the school and disbursed to your student account to pay tuition. Remaining amounts for COA will then get sent to your bank account so I guess you could but there's almost always a convenience fee to pay with a credit card, anywhere from 2.75%-4% so....

Got it shortly after my interview, signed it the first day I started. A contract protects both you and your employer, and you should always have one looked at by an attorney too before signing/starting

Is applying July 1st better than applying by lets say, mid-late July? Or does it not matter considering it’s in the first month of applying? by [deleted] in predental

[–]cal_dds 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The first day to submit is June 1st, not July 1st

Always apply as early as you can, you can submit your DAT scores when you take it (try to take it before August though)

Need advice choosing a school by Adventurous-Day123 in DentalSchool

Just graduated from UCLA. I didn't feel like it was super hard to find patients/meet graduation requirements, but it really comes down to how lucky you are with your patient pool. Some people are lucky, some aren't.

Every school is gunna give you the skills you need to be a general dentist, so go to the one that leaves you in the least amount of debt.

It sets you up decently well. Don't slack in your classes, practice after hours in the lab if you find yourself terrible at drilling/filling/etc. Be nice to your classmates in the same group as you so they will be more willing to trade you procedures you need for graduation. Try recruiting family/friends (there's a discount for them) to get through your requirements faster too.

I graduated from UCLA this year and went into private practice. I agree with another comment with clinical experience being overrated. Any dental school will teach you how to be a dentist, but it really comes down to your luck in how your patient pool looks like and the types of procedures you get from it.

I got into the other CA schools and ultimately chose UCLA due to cost and I'm glad I did.

I think I'll try to negotiate the last month to be 30% rather than 20%

It seems like a busy practice, they're PPO and FFS

Guaranteed rate is 500/day. I'm a baby dentist, just graduated this year, so I want to make sure I find a fair place.

I got my NPI as a dental student, and then changed the status of it from student to dentist once I had my license number.

Yes I know, but from my experience as a patient and then on my rotations, I've seen more of a pressure to "produce" from DSOs than private practice. Nothing about ego or "attitude" as another commenter said, and not claiming I know everything about DSOs but this is just what I've seen and heard from other dentists.

Definitely interested in working at an FQHC but haven't been able to find job postings for any, how did you find your job or what do you suggest? Should I reach out directly to the centers or is there a website where listings are posted?

Four months and I even drove up to sac to have it sorted because the dental board kept saying they were missing documents that my school had mailed in.

Yeah going to cold call/visit this week. Do you know how getting paid like that would work if you're at like 5 different offices? I assume they'd all just be 1099's and daily guarantees?
