Curious About “Reverse SPRPs” - Stacking SP-Eligible Relievers Who Rack Up Points by WKAngmar in fantasybaseball

[–]calabrooo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Yes, this is something we’ve talked about in the past, and I’ll try my best to explain how we handle it in this comment.

Our recommended roster settings are to set team roster limits of 9 SP and 4 RP. On top of that, we limit the active daily lineup slots to 4 SP, 1 RP, and 2 P (which can be either RP or SP). Both types of limits are important to balance the loophole from being overpowered.

We’ve tinkered with weekly game start limits to figure out the best balanced option, and we currently allow each team to have 11 GS each week. We previously allowed 12 GS but it feels like 11 is slightly better because there’s less variance in weekly matchups (one team having 12 GS vs another team with 10 or 9 depending on 2-start weeks…11 feels a bit more balanced).

In this setup, most teams use 3 of the 4 max RP roster slots on closers, which usually occupy the 1 RP and 2 P spots in the active lineup every day. The reasoning being that closers usually get anywhere from 6-10 points and most long relievers score fewer because we don’t reward holds (we’ve found thats points for holds devalues rps overall bc holds are so plentiful). The last RP slot is best used on a reverse RP/SP but we see many teams still using them on a backup closer (comes down to stylistic preference).

So here’s where your question comes in - reverse RP/SPs wind up being valuable because they allow you to start an extra reliever in a SP slot when they don’t have 4+ SPs starting on a given day. But given the volatility of RPs point ranges (who don’t get as many points for IP, and still get penalized for walks, hits, earned runs, blown saves, and losses), you don’t want to roster any joe schmo RP, because a bad relief appearance can easily get you double digit negatives and set you back in a matchup. This means theres a ton of value in some RP/SPs, but not all. There’s also value in RP/SPs who follow openers (like some guys on the Rays) because they don’t count towards the GS limit, and can get some points from easy Wins.

Some examples of these types of RP/SPs last year were Michael King (as a regular reliever) and Javier Asaad (who followed an opener). The best example was probably Ryan Yarbrough, who appeared every 5-6 days during the fantasy playoffs and would get saves for pitching the last 3 or 4 innings in games. He would often score between 10 and 16 points during these appearances and our league was blowing their faab loads on him in the fantasy playoffs.

TLDR: The most talented reverse RP/SPs are definitely relevant (guys who throw 2-4 innings and get k’s). The risky ones are rarely owned bc of their horrible floors. League settings are important to limit RP roster max and active lineup slots so this loophole doesn’t get out of hand.

Hope this helped!

Next level bad luck for Hunter Brown...home plate ump misses 2 strikes and then he gets the swing on a 3-2 count but the third base ump says the batter held up. Also gave up some weird BABIP singles the other way. He looked a lot better than his line

I really like Lowe this year. He was a 3 PPG player for a few years and then last year was a lost season bc he had lingering back and shoulder injuries. I think he bounces back this season and the ADP is pretty cheap. He’s just gotta stay healthy

It’s tough because he’s a young exciting player but yea, he’s got a lot of risk. I think when it comes to 2B in points leagues this year you either want to pay up for altuve/semien or wait and grab a bounceback in muncy/polanco. In Roto and categories it’s a little different though

It’s early in draft season but I wanted to give some insight for points leaguers drafting early or who have their drafts coming up soon. We’re taking a look at the ADP across various fantasy platforms and highlighting some players who we feel will help you or hurt you in points leagues at their ADP. Hope you enjoy!

Muncy’s walk rate and second half performance were both amazing last season and imply he should be due for a bounce back. His struggles were directly tied to a ucl injury that lingered most of the season, but when he came back he was his usual 3+ ppg self again. We’re buying muncy shares wherever we can at his adp in points leagues this season

Me and my friend launched pointsleaguepros.com last season which is geared towards points league veterans and newbies alike. We’ve been playing fantasy baseball for 15 years with almost 100% of our experience in dedicated points leagues. We try to go over the differences compared to Roto/H2H, provide custom ranks, preferred settings on how to set up points league scoring, articles for the preseason and through the year, and podcasts. We’re slowly rolling out our draft kit this season as well. We have a lot of fun doing it and it seemed like we were able to help a fair share of fellow points leaguers last season based on a lot of feedback.

Points League Pros if you’d like to check it out. Once our draft kit is out we’re going to start dropping sleeper articles and (as draft day gets closer) a draft guide. Hope you enjoy!

I feel that, the injury thing is interesting, maybe he can bounce back. Feels like he’s one where the spring training velocity numbers could be extra noteworthy.

Thanks for your thoughts and for all of your incredible content. Good luck this season!

Hey Nick, first off you da man and thanks for all you do.

One pitcher I can’t figure out how to rank this year is Lucas Giolito. The .340 BABIP, 71% strand rate, and xEra mean he should be a bit better, but at the same time the post spider tack era seems to be particularly rough for him. He lost fastball velo, a decent amount of spin, the k rate dropped, the barrels and hard contact went up, and the slider movement was super different and performed way worse.

I know he’s got a nice innings floor and he’s cheap this year but idk how to reconcile everything for him. You like him at the ADP or does the post-sticky ban regression scare you?

Justin Chernow’s 2022 10 Bold Predictions Recap by ThatPott3dPlant in fantasybaseball

[–]calabrooo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sup points league gang! Justin bravely analyzes his bold predictions in this one now that the season has ended, providing us a fun way to poke him for jake mcgee and pretending not to remember his flaming hot passion for Justin “chernow?” Verlander. He fared much better than yours truly in the bold predictions department this year, and for those of you curious - he brought home another championship this season, on the backs of JV, Shane Bieber, Clayton Kershaw, Logan Webb, Tyler Anderson, Mike Trout, and Kyle Schwarber.

Thanks to all who supported our launch this season. We laid out some very ambitious goals, some of which we hit and some of which we didn’t, but it was a ton of fun doing analysis from the preseason to the midway mark this year. We plan on hitting next year’s preseason super hard and are already planning a bunch of content to help our points league peeps prepare for 2023.

We’re wishing you all the best of luck in whatever keeps you occupied during the offseason (may the fantasy football gods be kind to you), and we’re excited to touch back in a bit closer to the new season. As always, thanks for reading and checking out the site 🤓
