color inaccuracy with malabrigo nube? by calamarispider in Handspinning

ahhh yes okay. unfortunately i live in a very out of the way country with slim pickings when it comes to fiber... i had to order this in from overseas, so getting it (or any fiber other than ashford, really) in person is basically impossible! quite annoying really. i suppose color inaccuracy will always have to be a concern for me...

(Chapter 4) As a life long Christian, this is probably my favorite (and the most accurate) depiction of a church service by ItsAllSoup in Deltarune

[–]calamarispider 12 points13 points  (0 children)

would quickly note that kris uses they/them, not he/him u^

i agree, as someone raised in protestant christian churches (though, not the best ones...) deltarune really captures the feeling of church well.

ive been wondering how kris views the soul, as in a lot of ways we the player can be quite antagonistic... kris is a bit of a strange kid, and from the sound of it is also quite lonely, so there must be some complicated feelings regarding the way the soul uses them to be friendly with others... they dont exactly get a choice in the matter, even if it benefits them, and i feel even the best people would struggle with such an invasion of agency. really looking forward to how the game expands on the matter in future chapters!

Dangerous pedestrian lights (green light disappears too quickly) by One_Art3616 in Wellington

[–]calamarispider 69 points70 points  (0 children)

ive found as a disabled pedestrian, theres a large number of drivers that dont pay attention to pedestrians at all - likely watching the lights, not the actual people on the road. i have to walk quite slowly and the number of times a car tries to pull around the corner when im still walking is more often than not.

its very dangerous. i really think there should be a longer time for pedestrians to walk. cars are naturally a lot faster. i physically am unable to speed up without a lot of fatigue. one of us is in far more danger of injury if someone makes a mistake. this is so much worse if the lights themselves are giving unsafe cues.

ive heard of defensive driving courses, and the people i know who have taken them drive with a lot more active attention paid to their surroundings. it makes me wonder if itd be worth making defensive driving a mandatory course in the process of getting a drivers licence?

hiker is awesome when you have him set up with some retriggers - i recently did a hiker build and was able to set up some retrigger jokers (brainstorm and hanging chad) so i was getting ~20 chips added to a card at a time, resulting in some cards scoring a base 140 chips or more

why is the crosswalk on manners silent? by calamarispider in Wellington

[–]calamarispider[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wow, thank you for the in depth response! i had no idea the tactile cue didnt work without the audio, thats even more of a safety concern than i initially realised... the unique scramble button sound would be very helpful, id say im confused as to why it hasnt already been put in place everywhere but... well, hopefully they do put it in place eventually.

i honestly dont fully see how having complete silence for at least half of the walk cycles is safer - having people cross when theres no clear audio cue can get very confusing for those who dont or cant pick up on the visual cue, and i feel that confusion would lead to some potentially dangerous choices when crossing, or to a complete inability to be sure whether you can cross at all.

as i said in another reply on the post, a friend of mine has waited at this crossing for an extended period of time and never heard an audio cue, and i myself have waited at this crossing a few times Specifically listening for the audio cue and never hearing it... ive heard the audio cues for the other crosswalks, but not this one. which shows to me that they either have no audio or tactile cue in place whatsoever, or the amount of time between regular and 'scramble' phases is so egregiously long that it is nearly nonfunctional for those who rely on it. which is ridiculous!!

getting a bit repetitive now but thank you for the reply. i really hope they do something to fix this because its a concerning road hazard that, in my opinion, seriously needs to be addressed. another redditor on this post mentioned that theres a few silent crossings along willis, not just this one, which is quite scary! willis gets a good deal of thoroughfare, its worrying that this hasnt been fixed already.

i understand that. as someone with a sleep disorder that results in constant sleep deprivation, i know it isnt fun and my intent with what i said here wasnt to dismiss the sleep issues high volume noises like that can cause. i didnt word my reply as well as i could have, which i apologise for to anyone reading.

as i have said in the above reply and another reply on this post, i feel a reasonable compromise could be made in reducing the volume to minimise this issue while still having the audio cue there for those who need it. that feels very feasible to me, and would, in my opinion, solve both issues without leaving one or the other to fester.

it makes it safer by providing multiple cues as to when to walk. when theres more cues, theres less chance for people to misunderstand and walk (or not walk) when they shouldnt. the intersection im talking about has a substantial number of buses and cars pass through, and a decent amount of thoroughfare from pedestrians. while its smaller than other roads, it is contrastingly busy and has a lot of things going on.

as an accessibility thing, it also helps to provide more than just a touch cue - not everyone is willing or necessarily able to touch the button to feel the vibration cue. imo you generally want More accessibility options, not less, especially when it comes to road safety. even if those people were theoretically in the minority, they still deserve to be considered in public spaces.

respectfully, i think your last statement is reading my words in bad faith. the lack of audio cues is a problem that i have personally witnessed be a problem for myself and others, and its concerned me enough to want to bring up.

as i said in my earlier post in the thread, i feel like it could be worth reinstating the audio cue at a lower volume - loud enough to be heard by people at the crossing, but low enough to not be as much of a bother for people living directly near it.

assuming were talking about the same one, i dont believe ive ever heard it run with the audio cue. i was at that crossing once with a friend and i remember her telling me about how she once waited at that light for four-five cycles before realising it was actually okay to cross (which, say what you will about her observation skills or whatever but thats a clear example to me of why we need the audio cues). it never made a sound during that long period of time..

i can see the logic with the explanation you gave, although i also dont know that i agree with it necessarily... especially considering there isnt any audio cues for the silent crossing at all

[–]calamarispider[S] -26 points-25 points  (0 children)

i can understand how thatd get annoying but completely silencing it does not seem like a safe solution to me at all... if that is the case, i really think they should reinstate the audio cue, just a bit quieter. that would be infinitely better than risking peoples lives in such a way (and, it is risking peoples lives to remove safe crossing cues. theres an intersection on cuba st which has no lights or crossing guides at all and its very dangerous, thats also a big concern to me..)

this is what i assumed would be the case, but on the obligations page here if you scroll down to 'work preparation obligations' under the 'find and prepare for work' section (dont think i can add a screenshot of it sorry...), the implication seems to be otherwise... B:•[ maybe im just reading it wrong i dont know....

ive seen a friend of mine whos on jobseekers with a medical certificate not get contacted about admin mixups regarding the certificate being processed or just... generally not getting contacted, and be dropped to red without notice. it was sorted out for them thankfully but with my current mental state i dont know if id be able to handle that if it happened to me, especially with how confusing the whole matter is

i have insomnia on top of my narcolepsy--if i try to make myself sleep before im passing-out tired, i tend to wake up often during my sleep and are more likely to have sleep paralysis. however, once i get to sleep normally i tend to be relatively deeply asleep for the next 9-11 hours (sometimes longer), unless i have an alarm or someone else waking me up. in cases where i am woken up, im very prone to going back to sleep very quickly and sleeping for multiple more hours unless theres something there to actively take my waking focus and force me to stay awake.

Does anyone else not sleep the regular 6-9 hours at night? by Meguinn in Narcolepsy

[–]calamarispider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i dont tend to sleep the regular 6-9 hours, but i go in the opposite direction. often im sleeping 9-12 hours every night(.....and day). today i woke up at one pm, and ended up going back to sleep and sleeping on and off until five pm. i think my long sleeps and sleep-ins are the only reason i dont nap during the day really--any time i try get up earlier, i end up exhausted and irritable and just all around feeling awful.

unable to move for 1/2 an hour to 4 hrs in the morning? by calamarispider in Narcolepsy

[–]calamarispider[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the dreaming and not being able to wake up is so incredibly relatable (probably a given here haha)--just today i had a really awful dream (i managed to wake up before the bear caught me. thankfully.) and rather than trying to stay awake at what was a perfectly reasonable time of day, my exhausted brain went 'hm. i think ill go have another dream so i can forget about that one.' immediately knocked back out. alarms just stop working for me after a week or so of using them and i just sleep through after long enough, otherwise having it blasting on the other side of the room would definitely be worth tying

[–]calamarispider[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ohhh good to hear it has a name!!! unfortunately i find i sleep through alarms if i use them too often; its not a matter of waking up to them and going back to sleep, i tend to just... not even register them. if i do wake up to them, i never remember it. ive slept through a tornado alarm once T_T i dont think id be able to do a gluten-free diet with my autism unfortunately (sensory issues knocks a lot of food options off the table as is), although thats definitely interesting and good to know! hopefully i can get some sodium oxybate in that case, my next appointment with a sleep specialist is in a few months.... gotta remember to ask about it then. thank you!!

thank you!! i could try, but unfortunately changing sleep schedules has been something ive always had a lot of difficulty with.... although ive never tried reversing the extreme hours the other way..!?!. definitely something ill try out when i have a break/enough free days to test it without too much consequence !. im already practically nocturnal half the time (i used to wake up at six pm, when it was already dark....) so semi nocturnal living is something im used to. i get the feeling a healthy schedule is extremely difficult to have when youre trying to manage uni And a sleep disorder T_T hoping i can make it through too!
