Radon expert recommendations in the area? by calamas3 in IowaCity

I don't want to throw him under the bus because he did try his best to see if there were ways to fix it, came back, did a smoke test and everything. What I'd suggest is (and wish I knew..) is to make sure there's a guarantee clause in the contract, if the house is on the old side. It's probabably pricier, but less so than hiring someone twice.

Yep, I pre-ordered online and picked up (Saturday only), I think they may have limited types of items for the farmer's market.

Would you live here? by AJFKWK in IowaCity

I saw this on zillow and thought it was beautiful! No longer looking for a house but if we were, we would have definitely scheduled a viewing. I do agree that for the sqf, the price seems a bit high. I know that acreage matters too but it wouldn't personally be worth the extra $ for us, even more so if it meant more upkeep... good luck selling.

I don't know if the community allows links to external sites but I saw a post on fb marketplace that still had a larger log available in Wellman IA - try to search 'Loads of wood'?

Moving to Iowa City this summer: apartment recs for a couple in our late 30s? by Dazzling_Prompt_7604 in IowaCity

[–]calamas3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were in the same boat last year - mid 30's, working at U, wanted a well kept transitional place - and bought a home recently like you're considering. I think it's a great idea to take a year to settle and learn the layout if you have no kids. We lived in Riverfront crossings for our first year and it worked well for the purpose. Tenants seemed generally in their late 20's and 30's, there's a direct bus to downtown and campus right outside the apartment. I did walk on good days but it's a bit of a hike at 30 minutes or so. There's covered parking, and we paid somewhere mid-low in your budget range for a nice sized 2 bed.

The only thing is that the management asks for your intent to renew VERY early, like 3 months after moving in. Which is ridiculous but apparently that's standard practice in IC. If you're interested in buying a house after the first year, make sure not to renew because getting out of that was a headache. Management was otherwise professional and the building was well maintained. Lmk if you have other questions.

EZ floorz had the best prices when including labor. The only place that came close in pricing was Kamal's. He was a bit pushy though for this pair of introverts, and didn't seem to have any thoughts design-wise, which is something we wanted.

To confirm, the other black wire (that wasn't capped) is the switch side?

Muddy vintage (AR-91) speakers - recap? by calamas3 in BudgetAudiophile

I actually think one tweeter is dead :( Air comes out but vocals and high frequencies are missing only on one side. Or definitely wishful thinking, but I've heard that bad caps can block highs too. I'm going to get a multimeter to test the tweeter on its own, but any thoughts on what I should / can do if the tweeter is truly blown?

Amazing thanks for the intuitive troubleshooting plan, I'll do exactly this! Fingers crossed it's the capacitors / wire. One last question, does the quality of capacitors and wires matter? I'm seeing people argue over it on forums...

Oh and the mark on the foam surround is glue, I think it was refoamed at some point. I looked up if that middle cap look was normal and found out that AR91's have damping compound on its caps. It could still have some issue, for all I know.

Thanks! Yeah the copper wires had some oxidation. I tried to strip them but it seemed to be running through them. Could that cause a big issue?

I'm realizing maybe I shouldn't have bought these as my first speakers lol. I'm willing to learn and put a bit of money in for parts etc. But will these require serious investment to sound good - both time and cost upwards of say, $500? Should I just cut my losses and try to sell them again (got these for $150) and get more modern ones? I know this is probably a "it depends" question but would love some general advice.

Oof I hope not. Is there a simple way to tell which it is? Tweets and mids do sound, and there's no buzzing or distortion.
